A drug used to treat AIDS-triggered lung infections may prevent the reproduction of HIV and possibly provide a new method for the control and elimination of the virus, Chinese scientists said Thursday. A research team led by Shen Binghui, a life science professor at Zhejiang University, found that a drug containing pentamidine can cut the life cycle of HIV and prevent the reproduction of the virus, helping the body#39;s immune system and fight off AIDS. HIV has an incubation period of 10 years on average, during which the virus infects immune cells and uses the cells and proteins to reproduce and sp, gradually damaging the immune system. Research indicates that a kind of human protein called FEN-1 has a decisive function in the reproductive process of HIV. Shen said his team found that the drug can prevent the reproduction of HIV by destroying the protein. The virus can no longer damage the immune system once it cannot reproduce, and a small amount of HIV can even be eliminated by a healthy immune system. Shen said the drug that his team is developing can greatly lower treatment costs. /201207/192244A buttoned-down state-controlled Chinese firm may have bought brokerage CLSA, but that#39;s not stopping the company from carrying on with its trademark quirky party-cum-conferences. This year#39;s guest is American boxer Mike Tyson, the former heavyweight world champion who is known for once having bitten a chunk out of an opponent#39;s ear-a man who more recently has starred in a one-man Broadway show and engineered a movie career through comedy films such as #39;The Hangover.#39; Mr. Tyson also has a troubled past, including a history of drug addiction and a 1992 rape conviction that landed him in jail and has previously complicated his efforts to travel overseas. CLSA#39;s annual investor forums are traditionally star-studded affairs, attracting headliners from Sarah Palin to George Clooney. #39;It#39;s really our flagship event,#39; says Edmund Bradley, CLSA#39;s group head of research. #39;Our clients are obviously interested in hearing from remarkable people who#39;ve had a role in shaping culture-people who can offer something unique and memorable.#39; On Thursday afternoon, news that Mr. Tyson would be attending the conference in Hong Kong-which some 1,500 investors from more than 30 countries are expected to attend-attracted a mixed response. #39;It#39;s a letdown. I don#39;t think I#39;ll learn anything from him,#39; said one local portfolio manager, who still intends to attend the forum, which runs from Sept. 10-14 and will include 40 other keynote and specialist speakers, including Acumen Fund founder Jacqueline Novogratz and Supachai Panitchpakdi, secretary-general of the U.N. Conference on Trade and Development. (U.N. Conference on Trade and Development)秘书长素帕猜(Supachai Panitchpakdi)。 #39;I guess it#39;d be comical the drunker I got,#39; said Jeb Altonaga, who heads Northern Trust Hedge Fund Services. #39;If he was in a celebrity boxing match, that#39;d be better, especially if they#39;d have one of their managing directors jump in the ring with him.#39; It wouldn#39;t be the first time something outlandish happened at a CLSA forum: in 2000, CLSA sent fund managers invitations to attend a performance by heartthrob Welsh singer Tom Jones. Each invitation contained a pair of women#39;s underwear, which the guests were invited to toss at Mr. Jones as he performed onstage. Since retiring from boxing, Mr. Tyson-once nicknamed #39;Iron#39; Mike and known as #39;the Baddest Man on the Planet#39;-has turned vegan and lives a more placid, domestic life in a Las Vegas suburb with his wife and children. However, remnants of his earlier bad-boy days remain: a distinctive black, swirled tattoo still covers the left side of his face. While Mr. Tyson#39;s star power might not match that of Alan Greenspan or Bill Clinton-two of the names who have attended CLSA#39;s forum in the past-CLSA says it tries to keep its speaker mix diverse. #39;Mike Tyson is an astonishing athlete with a big personality. You don#39;t want to have a senior political figure every year, nor do you want an actor every year,#39; said Mr. Bradley. #39;I think it#39;s good to have a change.#39; Mr. Tyson#39;s 1992 conviction for raping a beauty-pageant contestant has in the past led residents from Australia to the ed Kingdom to protest his travel overseas. While Hong Kong has previously barred people from entering the city on the basis of their criminal records, a spokesman for the city#39;s immigration department said Thursday its visa screening process is #39;quite fair and doesn#39;t involve any discrimination regarding whether or not they have a criminal record.#39; Cases such as Mr. Tyson#39;s would be considered on an individual basis, the spokesman added. /201208/196653Leftover women, this has been a much talked, and often controversial phrase in China in the past few years. It generally refers to single women above the age of 27. Some unattached female 30-somethings refer to themselves, half-joking, as ;loser dogs,; after a 2004 Japanese book on the same phenomenon in that country. In Taiwan, a real-estate company recently advertised a small, ritzy apartment as ideal for ;loser dogs.; This economic muscle is part of what gives women the freedom to embrace the single life.30岁以上的未婚女性半开玩笑地称自己是;败犬;,这个名字来源于2004年日本出版的一本讲述同一现象的书。 Leftover women usually choose prospective husband among those more capable men in terms of wealth and social status, especially well-educated women who have decent job and good salary. They won#39;t commit to marriage until they find a perfect candidate. So they choose to be single by themselves. Family and friends often see the lifestyle as a phase and expect the singletons to settle down, and many singletons do insist they#39;re not opposed to marriage, just determined not to commit until they find the right partner ; one who respects their independence and shares their life goals. Presumably that means not expecting a wife to stay home and put up with a meddling mother-in-law. The source of leftover women:剩女当道,哪些女性最容易被剩下来?woman who havenrsquo;t fallen in love before graduation大学毕业前还没谈过恋爱的女人perfectionism woman完美主义的女人women who always think that they have suffered a lot总以为自己已经历尽沧桑的女人;obedient; daughters听话的乖女儿women who seeing love as food把爱情当粮食的女人 /201203/174791

When investors shop for mutual funds, they often consider the methods the managers use to select stocks. But there#39;s another side to that coin that also merits attention: How do the managers decide which stocks to sell - and when to sell? A thoughtful, consistent approach to selling shares is just as important to a fund#39;s success as the same qualities in purchasing stocks. After all, errant sell decisions are lost opportunities for returns. #39;If you can have some type of structure within your process to make sell decisions or consider sell decisions, that keeps you one up on your competition,#39; says David Rolfe, chief investment officer at Wedgewood Partners Inc. in St. Louis and lead portfolio manager of the RiverPark/Wedgewood fund. ; Deciding what to sell is #39;one of the most difficult things for any investor,#39; he says. Sometimes it#39;s a matter of parting with a holding that has served the portfolio well for years but has little potential for additional gains. Other times, the fund manager has to acknowledge that he or she made a mistake in buying that security in the first place. Many fund managers provide a fair amount of insight into both sides of the investing equation in prospectuses, shareholder reports and other communications. We spoke to a handful of managers to discuss how they make the decision to sell. In With the New, Out With the Old 弃旧迎新 Mr. Rolfe and his team at RiverPark/Wedgewood manage a portfolio that forces them to regularly make decisions on which stocks to sell, because by policy the fund holds only 19 to 21 stocks. #39;My partners and I know that while we are looking at new ideas we are going to have to sell a position#39; to make room for any addition, he says. #39;That makes us constantly focused on those ideas in a portfolio that aren#39;t working out as well.#39; ; They pull the trigger when a buying opportunity provides a better long-term growth outlook than something that#39;s aly in the portfolio. Two examples of stocks his firm sold in recent months to make space for new positions are Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and UBS , victims of what Mr. Rolfe calls a #39;very difficult banking and investment environment.#39; #39;We thought they were the least attractive stocks in our current portfolio,#39; he says. #39;We sold them because we found a much better idea.#39; The two banking stocks were replaced with the shares of a couple of oil firms: National Oilwell Varco Inc. and Schlumberger Ltd. Acknowledge Your Mistakes 承认错误 Periodically - and especially when a stock is proving to be disappointing - it#39;s important for fund managers to go back and review the assumptions that were made at the time of purchase. #39;The hardest thing for investment professionals to come to grips with is when they have misanalyzed a stock,#39; says Phil Davidson, chief investment officer for value stocks at American Century Investments in Kansas City, Mo. ; He gives an example of when that happened at his firm. His American Century Mid Cap Value began building a position in Best Buy Co. in the third quarter of 2010, with most of the buying occurring in July of that year. Purchases were primarily in the low to mid s. But by the second quarter of last year, the fund began to sour on the stock and started selling, initially in the low s. It was out of the stock by the fourth quarter, with the final selling taking place in November, when the stock was in the to range. For the past few months, the stock has been trading in the to range. #39;The company had good free cash flow in a very dynamic retail world. But we underestimated the changes in the competitive landscape and how much the company would be hurt by that,#39; Mr. Davidson says. Best Buy#39;s big-box stores were seen as the category killer for a while, pushing out competitors such as Circuit City Stores Inc. But Best Buy more recently has lost business to online retailers that can offer more selection and often lower prices. It may seem obvious to sell a stock that isn#39;t meeting expectations, but the decision is more complicated than that, Mr. Davidson says, #39;because we never know for sure whether it#39;s permanent.#39; ; Think About What#39;s Fair In looking at stocks to buy, many investment pros estimate a fair value for the shares, based on factors including the company#39;s earnings, the rate of revenue growth and the multiples of earnings at which the shares of companies in a particular industry are trading. Fund managers generally aim to buy at a discount to fair value, and many have selling rules linked to that fair value, which is a figure that may change over time. For Andy Jung, co-portfolio manager for Aston/Montag amp; Caldwell Mid Cap Growth in Atlanta, a position becomes a candidate for trimming when the stock reaches 100% of his firm#39;s estimate of its fair value. #39;Then at 120% of our price target we have to take action in terms of reducing or in many cases eliminating the position outright,#39; he says. #39;The upside potential at that point is not as significant as the downside potential should the fundamentals falter.#39; ; Sometimes the selling starts before the 120% threshold, as it did this year for Aston/Montag amp; Caldwell#39;s holdings of Fluor Corp. #39;The stock had a nice run from mid-December at to February at almost ,#39; Mr. Jung notes. #39;Our very first purchase of the stock [was] in the summer of 2007, and we had a number of entry points. We exited the entire position on the assumption that at it was fully valued and because we were concerned it didn#39;t have the momentum given economic concerns.#39; When buying shares, Clint Harris, a senior client portfolio manager for the Invesco Diversified Dividend fund in Houston, looks for stocks that he thinks can deliver at least a 35% total return over two years and that have upside potential that is at least three times their downside potential. When a stock he#39;s holding realizes this upside potential, it becomes a sell candidate. Take, for example, DuPont Co., a stock the fund held since 2006 but sold in February. Mr. Harris and his team saw red flags when Wall Street analysts issued estimates of DuPont#39;s earnings that were higher than the Invesco team#39;s. #39;That tells me the potential upside for the stock is a bit limited,#39; he says, because the company#39;s earnings could disappoint investors who are guided by the Wall Street estimates. And that meant the stock no longer offered the upside the fund looks for. DuPont had more than met the fund#39;s criteria since the time of purchase, he says, but #39;now it is time to move on elsewhere.#39; ; /201208/196189

The world#39;s most widely followed faith is gathering persecutors, even non-Christians should worry about that. CHRISTIANITY is growing almost as fast as humanity itself, but its 2.2 billion adherents cannot count on safety in numbers. That is partly because the locus of the world#39;s largest religion is shifting to hotter (in several senses) parts of the world. According to a report published by the Pew Forum in December, the Christian share of the population of sub-Saharan Africa has soared over the past century, from 9% to 63%. Meanwhile, the think-tank says, the Christian proportion of Europeans and people in the Americas has dropped, respectively, from 95% to 76% and from 96% to 86%. 86%。But moving from the jaded north to the dynamic south does not portend an easy future. In Nigeria scores of Christians have died in Islamist bomb attacks, targeting Christmas prayers. In Iran and Pakistan Christians are on death row, for ;apostasy;;quitting Islam;or blasphemy. Dozens of churches in Indonesia have been attacked or shut. Two-thirds of Iraq#39;s pre-war Christian population have fled. In Egypt and Syria, where secular despots gave Christianity a shield of sorts, political upheaval and Muslim zeal threaten ancient Christian groups. Not all Christianity#39;s woes are down to Muslims. The faith faces harassment in formally communist China and Vietnam. In India Hindu nationalists want to penalise Christians who make converts. In the Holy Land local churches are caught between Israeli encroachment on their property and Islamist bids to monopolise Palestinian life. Followers of Jesus may yet become a rarity in his homeland. Compared both with the wars of religion that once tore Christendom apart and with various modern intra-faith struggles, such as those within Islam, little blood is being spilt. But the brutality matters. Even if Western powers no longer see promoting Christianity#39;s interests as a geopolitical priority, it is hard to imagine American evangelicals ignoring a full-scale clampdown on house churches in China. And whatever their own beliefs, Western voters have other reasons to worry about the fate of Christians. Regimes or societies that persecute Christians tend to oppress other minorities too. Sunni Muslims who demonise Christians loathe Shias. Once religion is involved, any conflict becomes harder to solve. Just don#39;t call it a crusade绝非十字军运动[注2]Among liberal values, the freedom to profess any religion or none has a central place. America#39;s government is bound by law to promote that liberty. In line with its own ideals, America is rightly as concerned by the persecution of Muslims of any stripe as by the travails of Christians in China or Jews and Bahais in Iran. And it objects when Christian lands, like Belarus, practise persecution. Other more secular Western countries should do more to defend that right. What about those who see persecuting other religions as part of their calling? No faith is blameless: from Delhi to Jerusalem many of those stirring up hatred are men of God. But there is a specific problem with Islam. Islamic law (though not the Koran) has often mandated death for people leaving the faith. There are signs of change. The 57-member Organisation of Islamic Co-operation has, with American encouragement, toned down its bid to outlaw ;blasphemy; in various UN resolutions. It also condemned the attacks in Nigeria. But more Muslim leaders need to accept that changing creed is a legal right. On that one point, the West should not back down. Otherwise believers, whether Christian or not, remain in peril. /201201/167625Every woman has a different approach to marriage, says Scott Haltzman, MD, a professor at Brown University and the author of several books, including The Secrets of Happily Married Men: Eight Ways to Win Your Wife's Heart Forever. Whether you're more take-charge or easygoing, bossy or nurturing, experts say that you can make a marriage work by recognizing your strengths and weaknesses. Below are the most common wife types. Which are you? If he has a need, you meet it. You make him chicken soup when he's sick. You tuck love notes in his bagged lunches and do the dishes most nights because he seems too tired—after all, you reason, his job is more stressful than yours and he needs some down time. "These are women who are driven by a fundamental need to maintain peace," he says. "The only problem is that when women like this crash, they crash hard." That's how Kathleen Buczko, 46, approached her marriage for many years. The marketing consultant from San Pedro, California, says she tried to be as nurturing as possible to her husband. Only one problem: She became burned out on being the "giver." 46岁的凯瑟琳 布奇科介绍了多年来她处理婚姻的方式。 "When my oldest was born, I tried to keep up the fa?ade," she says. "I just expected that my husband would sense my exhaustion and step in. He didn't, so about five weeks after our first son was born I was going back to work, and I cracked." Les Parrott, PhD, cofounder of RealRelationships.com and author of Trading Places: The Best Move You'll Ever Make in Your Marriage, says there's nothing wrong with wives who nurture. However, just be sure you do it without sacrificing your own needs. Mild depression, self-pity and negative expressions or outbursts are all warning signs of a nurturer who is on the verge of collapse—and maybe in need of nurturing herself. You make his breakfast in the morning, manage his social calendar, remind him to take his medication and lay out his clothes for work each morning (no white socks with slacks!). And why wouldn't you do these things? You love him and you want him to be well taken care of—and to eat his vegetables! If you have a tendency to mother your husband, you're not alone. According to Haltzman, lots of women do it, and men, for the most part, don't complain. "Men like being taken care of," he says. "It can give him a sense of feeling loved. It can also reduce anxiety about whether his needs are being met. You make his doctor's appointments and you put his medication out for him in the morning, so you don't have to worry about his health." But, this wife style can come with some concerns. "You could be fostering a sense of dependency that your husband may end up taking for granted," he warns. "The biggest concern is that it can start to create feelings of resentment. The wife starts to feel like the husband is just another child to take care of, and the husband can start to feel like he isn't respected." And, let's face it, he adds, "No man wants to be married to his mother." Linda Franklin, author and creator of TheRealCougarWoman.com, says she used to mother her husband. "I think it's pretty common for a woman to transfer that mothering instinct to her significant other," she says. "It took me a long time to understand that you can be compassionate and loving without being smothering and controlling. A mother is a mother, and a wife is a wife, and never should those roles get confused." 作家琳达 富兰克林是TheRealCougarWoman.com的创建者,她说自己总是母亲般的照顾丈夫。 Though this dynamic can work for some couples, Haltzman says try not to let your inner mother take over, and be on the look out for the warning signs of a troubled relationship. "When you start to feel annoyed about picking out his clothes in the morning or setting out his vitamins for him to take," he says, "it may be time to step back and rethink how you're approaching the relationship. It's better that his clothes don't match and he forgets the vitamins if it makes for a happier dynamic in the relationship." /201110/158914

Team GB athletes who win gold at this year#39;s home Olympics will be immortalised in the national memory. But for competitors from some other nations, prestige isn#39;t the only thing driving them on. Virtually all the world#39;s national Olympic committees will be offering cash rewards to athletes who take gold in theirdisciplines. Except Britain, which maintains that victory is its own reward. A gold medalist from Malaysia will walk away with about #163;400,000, for example. But if they emerge triumphant from badminton, the country#39;s strongest sport, they will receive an additional lump of gold - literally - worth some #163;380,000, The Sunday Times reports. A gold medallist from Russia#39;s remote Chelyabinsk region, meanwhile, will walk away with a #163;600,000 reward. For Team GB stars the rewards are far less tangible. From the moment any take gold, the Royal Mail will begin designing a stamp bearing their image and deliver them to 500 post offices for sale the following day. The champions#39; stamps will be available in books of six for #163;3.60 or individually for 60p - to be immortalised forever among philatelists. UK athletes could be forgiven then for looking enviously at the incentives on offer to their international rivals. The Indian government will be offering coaching jobs to its athletes who win medals, the country#39;s sports minister Ajay Maken has announced. Of the nations that finished in the top 10 of total medal hauls at Beijing four years ago, Italy is the most generous to its stars. It offers #163;116,000 for a gold. The basic payment on offer to Russian athletes is #163;85,000, but that can hiked up significantly by regional bonuses. The US will pay a not to be sniffed at #163;15,000 to a gold medallist, while Austria and Germany will pay just under #163;13,000. Still, with fat sponsorship deals on offer and the prospect of punditry work with broadcasters at future Games and related events, Team GB stars are unlikely to go hungry in years to come.Team GB athletes who win gold at this year#39;s home Olympics will be immortalised in the national memory. But for competitors from some other nations, prestige isn#39;t the only thing driving them on. /201207/192911
