During the Fortune Brainstorm Tech conference last summer, I spent some time chatting with Uber CEO Travis Kalanick about who might make a serious acquisition run at his company. I suggested Hertz HTZ 0.42% , to which he smiled and said something along the lines of “too small” (that proved prescient, as Hertz is currently valued at only .75 billion). Then I mentioned Google GOOG 0.18% , to which he smiled a bit wider, and said “At least they could afford it.” Two days later, word came that Google, via its Google Ventures unit, had helped lead a massive investment in Uber at around a .5 billion valuation (a subsequent round, led by Fidelity Investments, valued Uber at billion). The pairing made perfect sense. Google GOOG 0.18% got access to the country’s hottest data-driven consumer startup. Uber got hundreds of millions of dollars, an experienced big-company director and a tacit guarantee that rival Lyft wouldn’t be able to tap the Bank of Mountain View. Plus there’s the whole wildcard of self-driving cars. But here’s what I’m beginning to wonder: Are the two companies on an eventual collision course? Everyone seems to believe that Uber’s future is on-demand local delivery, with “rides” becoming a founding feature rather than a primary product. It aly has built out much of the infrastructure, and has doing trial runs of other products in various markets (i.e., flu shots in Boston last week). Google, of course, also appears to have interest in on-demand delivery, given its recent Express roll-out. Let’s assume both companies continue moving forward with such plans, and envision a future where “same-day” delivery is about 23 hours too slow. The obvious solution would be for Google (0b market cap, b in cash) to simply buy Uber. Only problem here is I can’t imagine Kalanick selling. Not the sort who wants a boss, even if that boss promises to be hands-off. Nor would any reasonable person want him as a powerful direct report. So that leads us to the two companies competing, despite the 2013 investment. And this is where it could get a bit ugly, particularly given that Google would still control the dominant search function for many of the goods Uber would be seeking to deliver (a battle Amazon aly is fighting). Again, this is way down the road – and possibly mitigated by Google passing on the opportunity or the two sides forging some commercial deal – but it’s the sort of thing that can happen when a strategic investment works out too well for both sides. /201411/341202IT COST AN ESTIMATED 0 million to launch Sandra Bullock into space in #39;Gravity#39; and million to turn back the clock in #39;American Hustle.#39; But not all the films up for Hollywood#39;s top honors had such exorbitant budgets. A few of the short-documentary Academy Award nominees were made with cameras that look like something you might bring to the beach--with price tags that won#39;t send you into a sweat. #39;My camera kit literally fits into a duffel bag,#39; said Edgar Barens, the director of #39;Prison Terminal: The Last Days of Private Jack Hall #39; . More compact, affordable equipment doesn#39;t just keep budgets down; it can also enable a different type of movie making. #39;To not have this huge technological thing on your shoulder,#39; explained Mr. Barens, #39;also breaks down that wall,#39; making it easier for him to bond with his subjects.《牢狱的终结:二等兵杰克#12539;霍尔的最后日子》(Prison Terminal: The Last Days of Private Jack Hall)的导演埃德加#12539;贝伦斯(Edgar Barens)说:“我的整套摄影装备用一个行李袋就能装下。” No less impressive than the Oscar-nominated films being made for relatively small sums is what amateurs are able to capture with the smartphones in their pockets. As the price of cinema-quality gear drops and the consumer-level cameras advance, the barrier to making a high-quality film has never been lower. No matter what your skill set or budget, great tools are within reach. We asked the pros to recommend gear appropriate for smartphone shooters and soon-to-be Oscar-contenders alike. Shoot steady. Nothing screams #39;amateur home movie#39; like shaky, nausea-inducing shots. Conrad Mess, a Spain-based filmmaker, has won several awards at the iPhone Film Festival. His favorite solution is the Lollipod (, lollipod.co.uk ), an ultra lightweight tripod that can also serve as a monopod or boom stand. #39;You can pan or tilt very smoothly with it,#39; he said. #39;And it almost fits in your pocket.#39;稳定拍摄。 Keep the camera moving. #39;If you move the camera smoothly, you will get a much better, more #39;pro#39; look,#39; said Mr. Mess. To get this effect, he recommended the Glidetrack Mobislyder (, mobislyder.com ). It includes five different mounts for attaching a smartphone or a small DSLR camera to a 12-inch track. Even though it#39;s relatively short, it can be used to pull off interesting tracking shots. Another solution is the Steadicam Smoothee (0, tiffen.com ), a version of the stabilizing equipment used by the pros that is been scaled down for smartphones and small cameras. Just be sure not to overdo it with the motion. #39;Movements with a cellphone should be mostly slow and smooth,#39; Mr. Mess said. Vary your lenses. The standard lens on your smartphone will only get you so far. For example, when shooting indoor scenes where you want to capture as much of the surroundings as possible, iPhone Film Festival co-founder Ruben Kazantsev said a wide-angle lens is ideal (he used one to film inside a police car for his latest film, #39;Departure.#39;) For iPhone shooters, he recommended the Smart Phocus 3 Lens Bundle (0, smartphocus.com ). It includes a case that gives an iPhone a more camera-like grip and includes three detachable lenses: wide angle, macro and Telephoto. Upgrade your software. For greater control over the iPhone camera than the stock Camera app allows, Messrs. Kazantsev and Mess both use the Filmic Pro (, available for iOS). It allows you to focus on different objects in the frame; increase resolution for a higher quality picture; and achieve special effects, like slow motion and time-lapse . Upgrade your camera. For Mike Staniforth, a filmmaker who has shot award-winning films on an iPhone and traditional cameras, a DSLR camera is a must-have for anyone who#39;s serious about movie making, because it delivers a better quality picture, especially in low light. The relatively affordable Canon EOS Rebel T5 EF-S paired with the Canon EF 50 mm f/1.8 II lens (0 and 6, shop.usa.canon.com ) make a good starter kit, he said. But be sure to upgrade the lens when you#39;re y to commit to the art form. #39;Realize that camera bodies come and go each year,#39; he said. #39;The real investment is the glass on the front.#39;升级你的摄像器材。 Record better audio. According to several filmmakers, beginners are better off using prerecorded music for their films than trying to record live dialogue--mainly because the quality of built-in microphones on smartphones and camcorders aren#39;t up to the task. But if you want an affordable way to capture intelligible dialogue, Mr. Staniforth recommended the Zoom H1 (0, zoom.co.jp ). This stand-alone digital recorder also functions as a stereo external mic for a camera, and can be attached using an optional hot-shoe mount. Stretch time. Time-lapse is another technique that can take amateur to the next level. Filmmaker Jeffrey Karoff used it for his Oscar-nominated documentary short, #39;CaveDigger,#39; by leaving an old DSLR camera and a Canon TC-80N3 Timer Remote Controller (0, shop.usa.canon.com ) with one of his subjects. Although this model is only compatible with Canon cameras, #39;timer remote controls#39; are available for other brands of camera. Frame your shot...with an app. To get a sense of what a shot will look like using different lens configurations and settings, Kieran Crilly, director of photography for the Oscar-nominated short documentary #39;The Lady In Number 6: Music Saved My Life,#39; uses the Artemis Director#39;s Viewfinder app (, available for Android and iOS). #39;You tell it what camera and what lens you are on, and it shows you what the frame will look like,#39; he said. #39;It#39;s handy when you#39;re scouting.#39;用应用软件查看画面构图。 Track the sun. According to Mr. Crilly, another popular app among DPs is Sun Seeker ( for Android, for iOS), which will map out the sun#39;s trajectory using your smartphone#39;s camera, GPS and compass. #39;If you#39;re going to set up a shoot and you#39;re not sure if the sun is going to come in, it#39;s a really useful tool,#39; he said. Get a pro-grade camera that won#39;t blow your budget. At least two of the films nominated for best short documentary at this Sunday#39;s Academy Awards--#39;The Lady In Number 6#39; and #39;CaveDigger#39;--were shot on a camera that cost less than ,500: the Canon 5D, the latest model of which is the Mark III (,400, shop.usa.canon.com ). Its price point is almost unheard of. #39;To have that quality on a consumer level was really something brand new,#39; said Mr. Karoff. That said, the lens is what#39;s key. #39;It doesn#39;t matter how good a camera sensor is, you need good glass to get the best from it,#39; said Mr. Staniforth. To shoot #39;The Lady In Number 6,#39; Mr. Crilly used a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM lens (,299, shop.usa.canon.com ). #39;That really is kind of the hero lens that most people tend to take out on docs,#39; he said. But to soften the Canon 5D#39;s ultra-crisp image, Mr. Crilly also employed filters, in this case, the Tiffen 4x5.65 Soft/FX 1 Filter (1, tiffen.com ) and Schneider 4x5.65 Classic Soft 1 Filter (5, schneideroptics.com ). Invest in a quality mic. At this level, you#39;re going to want to record usable audio and ambient sound, and a mic like the Sennheiser ME66 (0 with power module, sennheiser.com ) will help you pull that off. It#39;s what Mr. Barens, the director of #39;Prison Terminal,#39; used when shooting his Oscar-nominated film at the Iowa State Penitentiary. #39;It#39;s directional enough to be crisp,#39; he said, #39;but not too shot-gunny that it#39;s hyper crisp on one person only.#39;投资购买高品质的麦克风。 Tailor your lighting. The pros customize their light sources to the shoot. For the lowlight alleyway shots in the Oscar-nominated short documentary #39;Facing Fear,#39; director of photography Svetlana Cvetko, used the battery-powered Bescor LED-95DK2 Dual LED Light Kit (0, bescor.com ). But she lighted her interviews with the more expensive Kino Flo Diva-Lite 400 Universal Fluorescent Light Fixture (,233, including lamps, kinoflo.com ). Make your rig portable. The downside of being able to fit your gear into a bag is having to carry it all yourself. Mr. Karoff recommended the LowePro Pro Runner x450 AW (0, lowepro.com ) because it has wheels and, critically, backpack straps: #39;That was important because we did a lot of hiking into the hills.#39;让你的装备携带轻便。 /201403/279620

Apple Readies IPhone For China LaunchIPhone's Been A Long Time Comin' In China. Some Consumers Couldn't WaitEven as Apple (AAPL) gears up to officially launch the iPhone in China, as many as 1.5 million consumers in China have aly managed to get their hands on one through various unofficial channels. Below, the main methods for buying an iPhone (or something resembling one) in China now.Gray MarketA Beijing Internet company employee - who asks that only his surname, Shang, be used - bought his first-generation iPhone at mobile-phone market in the capital's famed Zhongguancun electronics shopping district, just a few months after its June 2007 release in the U.S. He paid 5,500 yuan, or about 0, for the privilege of being one of China's earliest iPhone adopters.'I was very much interested in its large touch-screen design. At the same time, it also serves as a multimedia player and game machine. I was attracted by all these functions,' he says. An Apple lover, Shang counts many of the company's products among his gadgets: MacBook Pro, Mac Mini, iPod Classic and iPod Nano.Shang divides iPhone users into two groups: Those simply fascinated by its unique design; and those with a thorough understanding of Apple products and the Mac operating system. 'I purchase applications in App Store and download the de-coded ones from the Web as well,' Shang says. 'I also use Mobile Me service, which is a good combination with iPhone.'Still, he points out a few problems using his iPhone. 'For instance, the input method is not good and convenient enough' for writing Chinese characters. 'It's not easy to forward messages. When trying to open a couple of Web pages at the same time, the browser might refuse to work.''But still, I think it's aly the best high-end phone, even with these many problems,' he says.Jessica Wu, a 26-year-old trading company employee in Nanjing, bought her 8-gigabyte iPhone for about 0 at a mobile phone market in Feb. 2008. Her unit is 'jailbroken,' which allows her to download applications from Apple's App Store. One problem with her phone is that every time she upgrades the software, she has to jailbreak it again. 'Original iPhones can be upgraded directly through iTunes, which is more convenient.'But it's a small price to pay, she says. 'To some extent, iphone and other Apple products are considered a status symbol.'Buying Outside ChinaZhang May, a 28-year-old from Shanghai asked a friend to buy her an iPhone in the U.S. two years ago. She paid 9. 'I chose iPhone because of its good brand, good quality and good function,' she said. Zhang says she's had no major problems using her jailbroken iPhone in China.Hong Kong a self-run Chinese city where the iPhone is aly officially sold has been a popular place to pick up a legally unlocked iPhones without a SIM card or any type of commitment to a local cellular plan. Mainland Chinese residents can visit the city easier these days than in the past, and those who have access to a Hong Kong mailing address can also make purchases via Hong Kong's online Apple Store. Current prices range from HK,488 to HK,288, or about 0 to 0.The Shanzhai RouteThose with less money can hope that the iPhone's official launch in China will bring lower prices. HTC will be allowed to continue exporting its newest phone to the US in spite of an attempt by Apple to keep some of its handsets out of the country during a long-running patent dispute between the two groups. The US International Trade Commission will continue to investigate whether some of the Taiwanese group#39;s phones are violating an Apple-owned patent but the US group#39;s unsuccessful attempt to immediately halt imports of the phones represents a small victory for HTC, according to analysts. HTC#39;s sales have been slipping, and any delay in the US to the launch of its latest models would have brought them into more direct competition with new phones expected from Samsung and Apple this year. Technology companies are increasingly turning to courts to halt sales or force redesigns of competitors#39; devices, alleging patent infringements. Patent fights between Apple and groups including HTC and Samsung, which make handsets using Google#39;s rival Android operating system, are particularly fierce. Android is the most popular operating system for smartphones, while Apple#39;s iPhone system trails in second place, according to data from ComScore. The ferocity of the courtroom fights is creating ;a lot of uncertainty; for companies and investors, said CK Cheng, an analyst with CLSA in Taipei. ;At least for now, lots of people are talking about how it#39;s a flawed patent system in the US but unfortunately that#39;s the reality there,; said Mr Cheng. In its case against HTC, Apple argued that HTC#39;s phones were continuing to violate a previous order that HTC remodel parts of the phones#39; software to avoid infringing an Apple patent. Apple had asked the trade commission to keep HTC#39;s phones, including its new flagship One X model, out of the US. The trade commission declined on the grounds that it could not yet determine whether or not the phones complied with the prior order. Some HTC phones were earlier this year held up by US customs due to the ongoing fight with Apple. In late May, HTC said its shipments had been cleared after customs determined they were not violating the Californian company#39;s patent. HTC still faces additional disputes over intellectual property in addition to the ongoing investigation into whether HTC is still violating Apple#39;s patent. Nokia last month launched cases against HTC and BlackBerry maker RIM. /201207/189111Chocolate could provide the key to tackling a persistent cough, researchers claim. They are carryingout the final stages of clinical trials on a drug that contains theobromine, an ingredient naturallypresent in cocoa and chocolate. If the trials are successful, the drug could be on the market withintwo years. More than seven million Britons suffer from a persistent cough, defined as one that lasts for morethan two weeks. Some have asthma-like symptoms while others suffer from heartburn. But most widely available cough products soothe the symptoms rather than deal with the cause, and havebeen criticised for side effects such as drowsiness. There are safety concerns about side effects from other products that are codeine-based, which use a chemical called an opioid. Previous research by London’s National Heart and Lung Institute found that theobromine is 33 per centmore effective than codeine at stopping coughing. It works directly on the vagus nerve, which isresponsible for persistent coughing.Research in South Korea has shown that theobromine has none of the side effects associated withstandard drug treatments for persistent cough. /201012/121538

On Tuesday, Apple unveiled a new bigger iPhone and the smartwatch aficionados have been waiting for. Fortune had 30 minutes to try them both out. What we found in our limited test were two impressive devices in keeping with Apple’s reputation for innovation and design. But some questions still remain. Apple’s new smartwatch arrives amid a watch boomlet from companies like Samsung, Sony, and Motorola. When Apple Watch arrives early next year, the 9 device (at least for the low-end design) will come in two different watch face sizes with wrist straps made of leather, synthetic materials and metal. Its 1.5- and 1.65-inch displays use scratch-resistant glass. Sensors on the back of the watch face detect a user’s pulse to track things like calories burned and distance walked or run. Up close, the Apple Watch is among the sleekest smart watches on the market, matched only in looks by Motorola’s Moto 360. Most smart watches look clunky or uninspired — just a few rungs above those kitschy calculator watches made popular in the 1980s. But Apple’s does a good job masquerading as a slick, traditional timepiece. It’s just small and thin enough — even for folks with smaller wrists like myself — and the premium wrist straps provided in the demos feature the kind of materials found in Swatch or higher-end time pieces. The watch I spent time with was a size 38 — Apple will sell two sizes, 38 millimeters and 42 millimeters — with the leather strap made of the same thin, flat material used in Apple’s leather iPad cases. For an iPad case, it’s nice, actually, and keeps bulk to a minimum. But when used for a watch strap, that same thin, flat material felt sort of cheap to me. That’s a matter of opinion, of course, and users will have watch strap options, regardless. On the right side of the watch face are two buttons — a dial called the “digital crown,” which operates a lot like the crowns people used to wind up their old watches. Only here, that dial helps to navigate s on the screen. Screwing the dial left and right zooms in and out on the apps featured on the main screen. Meanwhile, pressing a button below the digital crown brings up a brief list of favorite friends and family members. Apple argues this feature will become popular with people seeking a shortcut to quickly their contact list. As an example, Apple SVP of Operations Jeff Williams measured his heartbeat with a watch and sent it to one of his buddies, in this case, Apple SVP of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue, who was onstage. In the real world, I can’t see pulse-tracking being shared this way at all, but I can see this becoming useful if I want to dictate a text to a friend while out jogging. Apple also made a big deal over two new fitness apps — one for tracking my movements everyday, the other for tracking specific activities like a 5-mile run — but I wasn’t able to test those out. If you’re not used to larger smartphones from Samsung and the like, cradling the larger iPhone 6 in one hand will come as a shock. This thing is thin-and-light, but it’s big, like a miniature iPad Mini. At 4.7-inches, the smaller iPhone 6 is just .7 -inches larger than the iPhone 5S, so the difference there is negligible. But both models now sport an aluminum back that curves around to the front, so there are less seams or gaps in the body. Despite being lightweight, they feel extremely well-made, even more so than the iPhone 5S. A new A8 chip inside zipped along while surfing the web or switching among apps I had open, but the 5S isn’t sluggish either, truth be told. How the iPhone 6 handles 3-D graphics-heavy mobile games should be a better indicator of how powerful Apple’s new chip is. While Apple’s latest devices seem impressive on first blush, questions remain. Wearable tech, particularly watches, are such a new device category, it’s unclear whether there’s a huge appetite for them, even those sold by Apple. (Do enough Apple users want a watch that communicates with their phones?). Apple also failed to mention the watch’s battery life, a feature CEO Tim Cook bragged about for the iPhone 6 — a worrisome sign, but it also could be because the Apple Watch doesn’t hit until next year. Meanwhile, the iPhone 6 is well-made, but the company’s Apple Pay payment system, which works via a chip inside the phone, could see the same fate as Google Wallet if enough retailers don’t sign-on. But at least one thing was clear: Apple intrigued people — a lot of people — on Tuesday. So mission accomplished. For more, keep an eye out for Fortune’s full reviews of the iPhone 6 later this September and Apple Watch early next year. But don’t let that stop you from weighing in now. What did you think, Fortune ers? Did Apple deliver, or fall flat? Weigh in with comments below. /201409/327311

To appreciate why Microsoft Corp. is having trouble choosing a new chief executive, consider these awkward boardroom dynamics: a founder who believes he knows best, a CEO who stepped down under pressure for a faster change in strategy, and, soon, an activist investor pushing for big changes. It#39;s been more than four months since Steve Ballmer announced his plans to retire. And while Microsoft has said it will pick a successor by summer 2014, board members had hoped to choose one by November or December, according to people familiar with their thinking. John W. Thompson, the director leading the CEO search, says the board is methodically seeking the right person for a complex role. But corporate directors, management consultants and some executives contacted about the job say the potential for boardroom clashes at Microsoft is a turnoff. If Chairman Bill Gates and Mr. Ballmer stay on the board, Microsoft would be an outlier. Just eight companies in the Samp;P 500 index have two of their former CEOs as directors, according to Equilar Inc., which tracks executive compensation. #39;No CEO worthy of the title wants his or her predecessors second-guessing everything in the boardroom,#39; said Jean-Louis Gass谷e, a former Apple Inc. executive who has served on public-company boards. Microsoft hasn#39;t said whether both Mr. Ballmer and Mr. Gates, the company#39;s co-founder and CEO for 19 years, will remain directors. In November, shareholders re-elected each of them for a one-year board term, but they would be able to resign their posts sooner. At least some external executives who discussed the CEO job with Microsoft directors have expressed concerns about being hamstrung if the two men continue to serve on the board, according to people familiar with their thinking. Outside CEO candidates #39;know that part of what they are negotiating for is the level of engagement#39; of Mr. Ballmer and Mr. Gates once the new leader takes charge, a person familiar with the matter said. Microsoft#39;s experience shows the challenge in crafting a role for a founder or former CEO. Having them around as a sounding board or an elder statesman can be handy--unless the arrangement devolves into squabbling or a boardroom coup. Former Pfizer Inc. CEO Henry #39;Hank#39; McKinnell sat on the board alongside his predecessor for more than five years, until directors orchestrated his retirement in 2006, 18 months ahead of schedule. #39;What#39;s really a bad idea is a former CEO of your company#39; staying on the board, Mr. McKinnell said in a late-October interview. #39;You can#39;t win.#39;麦金内尔在去年10月底接受采访时表示,将前任首席执行长留在公司董事会是在不是一个好主意,你赢不了。Ford Motor Co. CEO Alan Mulally, who has been considered for the Microsoft post, has long lived with a similar power-sharing arrangement. Bill Ford Jr. is the auto maker#39;s executive chairman, as well as a former CEO, major stockholder and member of its founding family. Some candidates for the top post at Microsoft seem to be particularly uneasy about Mr. Ballmer, according to people familiar with their thinking. He has made several recent decisions that have altered the company#39;s strategy and generated controversy among managers and investors. Ten days after the August announcement of his planned exit, Mr. Ballmer struck a .4 billion deal to buy Nokia Corp.#39;s mobile-phone business, thrusting Microsoft into a new field and adding 32,000 people to its workforce. This summer, Mr. Ballmer also pushed through a sweeping corporate reorganization that garnered mixed reviews inside and outside Microsoft. People who know him question whether Mr. Ballmer could sit by if his successor wanted to break free of his strategy or policies. It isn#39;t clear how Microsoft#39;s board, which backed Mr. Ballmer#39;s moves, would react if the next CEO wanted to reverse some of his decisions. Microsoft directors have sought to delicately manage Mr. Ballmer#39;s role in screening CEO candidates, said the person familiar with the matter. Neither Mr. Ballmer nor Mr. Gates has #39;veto power#39; over the selection of the company#39;s next leader, this person said. Messrs. Ballmer and Gates collectively own 8.3% of Microsoft#39;s stock. Mr. Ballmer himself faced a similar challenge when he took over as CEO from Mr. Gates in 2000. Their power struggles in the early years stalled some company decisions. Microsoft director David Marquardt and others stepped in, seeking to lessen tensions between the two men, who have known each other since they shared a Harvard University dorm in the mid-1970s. Mr. Gates is no wallflower either. People who have worked with him say that as chairman and a revered technologist, he can dominate board discussions. In an interview with the Financial Times published in November, Mr. Gates said he expected to spend considerable time working with the next Microsoft CEO. Adding to the cast of boardroom characters is ValueAct Capital Management. The hedge fund bought more than billion in Microsoft stock in 2013, and parlayed shareholder unhappiness into a board seat. ValueAct President G. Mason Morfit, who is likely to join the Microsoft board this year, will be the first director in the company#39;s 38-year history not selected by Microsoft#39;s board. Relations can be rocky when an activist shareholder joins a board he previously criticized. Investor William Ackman quit the J.C. Penney Co. board in August after he clashed with other directors over the retailer#39;s management and strategy. On the flip side, adding an activist shareholder#39;s representatives to the board helped Office Depot Inc. last year to smooth a bumpy merger with OfficeMax Inc.当一位维权股东加入其之前批评的董事会时,关系可能很难处理。 J.C. The patents in question cover flat screen displays used in televisions, monitors, notebooks, tablets and smartphones. Facing pressure from shareholders amid slowing sales, Mr Gou said at Foxconn’s annual meeting: “Please be patient, don’t be in a hurry#8201;.#8201;.#8201;.#8201;I’m also the biggest shareholder, so if it’s bad for Hon Hai, it’s also bad for me.” Representatives from Toshiba, Funai, and Mitsubishi could not be reached for comment. It posted a 1.2 per cent rise in revenue last year to T.95tn (2bn), missing a target set by Mr Gou. Net income, however, was up 13 per cent to a record T7bn, partly because of foreign exchange gains. There are signs that shareholders are growing restless: a group of global investors including Aviva, Axa, and Calstrs announced this week plans to engage the chairman on questions of transparency, long-term strategy, board composition and the “key man” risk posed by Mr Gou, who founded the company 40 years ago. /201406/308367

Internet portal operator Sina, in fourth place, had an 8.89% share that put it 0.01 percentage points behind Google, according to Analysys. Baidu ranked first by a wide margin, with a 30.1% share putting it more than 20 percentage points ahead of the nearest competitor. The loss of advertising market share marks a steady erosion of Google#39;s presence in China since the company relocated its mainland China search service to Hong Kong in March, citing frustrationsover hacking and censorship. Both Google and Alibaba declined to comment. Analysys analyst Li Zhi said it#39;s too early to predict how the fourth-quarter figures will look, but that Sina would surpass Google if things continued at their previous pace. #39;Google needs to make a quick response by redoubling its efforts in direct ad sales and cooperating with ad agents,#39; she said in the research note. Analysys data also show Baidu#39;s share of revenue in China#39;s online search market rose to 73% in the third quarter, up three percentage points from the previous quarter, while Google#39;s share fell 2.6 percentage points to 21.6%. /201311/264763
