Employment is moving, ever so slowly, in Barack Obama’s direction ON APRIL 4th Barack Obama announced, to no one’s surprise, that he would seek a second term in 2012. The timing was auspicious. Three days earlier the job market, a key determinant of his re-election chances, took a turn for the better. On that day the government reported that non-farm payrolls rose a hefty 216,000, or 0.2%, in March, led by manufacturers, hotels, restaurants and temporary staffing agencies. Strapped state and local governments trimmed their payrolls for the fifth month in a row. But private payrolls, a better indicator of the economy’s animal spirits, have posted their biggest two-month advance since 2006, at 470,000.4月4日,不出众人所料,奥巴马宣布他将争取在2012年连任总统。 Meanwhile, the unemployment rate fell to 8.8% from 8.9%. It has now plummeted a full percentage point in four months, a feat unmatched since early 1984 and a fact Mr Obama made sure to point out. No doubt he hopes it augurs for him what it did for Ronald Reagan in 1984. Like Mr Obama, Mr Reagan endured a savage recession early in his first term that crushed his approval ratings and cost his party seats in the mid-terms. But by 1984 job creation was on a roll and Mr Reagan romped to re-election. A closer look at the data, however, illustrates why the economy is less of a tailwind for Mr Obama than it was for the Gipper. Unemployment is falling far faster than the health of the economy can explain. In the four months during which unemployment dropped a percentage point in 1983-84, non-farm payrolls leapt by 1.6m. In the last four months they have advanced a mere 630,000. The survey of households that yields the unemployment tally shows a much bigger gain in employment than the survey of employer payrolls, but still less than in 1984. 201105/136721Tonight the newly winged young would join the feeding frenzy. They are now fully fledged members of the colony,y to investigate the bounty of this land, and dark in the dusk with breathtaking numbers once again. Morning in Costa Rica ,and the army is on the move again. Each day about a third of the nest spills out in the deluge of ants. And for moat of their prey, resistance is futile.

Female drink offences soarThe number of women being arrested for drunk and disorderly (Damp;D) offences has soared by up to 1,000 per cent in parts of Britain.Welcome back .Free drinks, special offers in club, price happy hours, it's all feeling a massive increase in binge drinking amongst young women. New figures obtained by this program show the number of women arrested for being drunk and disorderly has soared by up to 1000% in some places. Now one chief cause of all called for a complete ban on its county drinks and alcohol advertising in an effort to tackle it all. Our North England Correspondent Nick Martin has been out on the streets of New Castle upon time to see just how bad it gets. It's only a Wednesday night, but the bars and the night clubs are filling up. This is New Castle ,the city with a reputation for a good night-out. Most of people here will have a harmless midweek drink. But it won't turn out that way for others. Figures obtained by Channel 4 News have revealed a change in women's behavior when it comes to a night on the tiles. They appeared to show that women are getting into more trouble with the police than ever before. We asked all the police forces in the UK to give us figures on the number of women they had arrested for being drunk and disorderly in the past five years. 38 forces responded to the survey, 21 of them had directly comparable figures. The West Midlands recorded the biggest rise--arrests there have got from just 59 in 2003, 2004 to more than 10 times that this year when 731 women were arrested .In Gwent South Wales there has been a 7-fold increase over five years from 28 arrests to 190. Leicestershire recorded just 14 arrests in 2003/4, but the most recent figure showed that the number has risen to nearly 80. Over Cheshire the earliest figure comes from 2005/6 when 85 women were arrested. And in just 3 years, that number has more than doubled to 200. And in Northumbria, the region with the most arrests each year, the number has increased by nearly 700, 1414 in 2003/4 to more than 2000 this year. Here in New Castle, for example, the police are concerned. They know and have them for some period of time now that womenn are drinking as much if not more than men on the average night out. But what these figures appear to show is that more and more women aren't leaving and going home in a taxi or on the late bus. But in a police van like this; the police say they want changes; the pops say they've made those changes, and the contest just wants another drink, it's a kind of stalemate. I would not rely on, oh on the private sector just self-regulate prices. I think there should be some emendation around prices that takes it or makes it extremely difficult to drink to access. I also think that the advertising on alcohol should simply not be allowed. It is midnight and signs that some have had too much to drink. The leisure industry denies that it is wholly responsible for this convert behavior, but accepts that drinks are cheaper because competition is higher. We are seeing many more people arriving on our businesses aly drunk, having consumed alcohol at home. It's a fact we have to face this. The government asked us to face it. The police authorities have to face it. And We have to face it. It's an industry that supermarkets are selling alcohol below local price and this is fueling the problem. The fact is that no one really knows who is fueling the problem of excessive drinking on Britain streets. But the figures appear to show that women are playing a bigger part than they ever have before. They mark around the big market and in the statement tight the home office told us responsible drinking is something we must all take responsibility for and losing control through excessive drinking is no excuse for anti-social behavior and violence. Overall, alcohol-related violence has fallen by around a third since 1995 and we are not complacent. We are launching this summer a multi-million pound publicity campaign to help prevent the harms that irresponsible drinking can cause to communities and individuals.200811/55170

Millions of Americans enjoy playing golf. But golf courses are not known to be environmentally friendly. They demand a lot of fresh water, fertilizers and herbicides to keep them looking green. That’s true of most golf courses. But let’s look at one that is trying something different. This is the Miami Beach Golf Club. The grass used here is called “seashore paspalum”. “It’s the most environmentally friendly grass in the world.” Dr. Ron Duncan is a turf researcher at the University of Georgia and a leading expert on seashore paspalum. “And environmentally friendly from the standpoint that you can save the potable water use from the human side and utilize all other alternative water sources like brackish water or water out of sewage plants to irrigate this grass. Also you have a reduced management budget because it requires about half the fertilizers that you normally use on the other grasses. Also you can save on pesticide use.” What makes seashore paspalum so special is that it can survive and thrive in high-salt environments. So brackish water or partially salty water can be used to irrigate this grass. This translates into big savings for the golf course. “We estimate at this point we are gonna reduce our dependency on fresh water by about 65-75%, that'll save us somewhere, in a range of 175-200 thousand dollars annually on fresh water.” Steve Forrest is the architect who designed this golf course. He says seashore paspalum has other advantages besides being environmentally friendly. “This grass is able to provide a striping pattern and the black you would see on a football field or if you are vacuuming your carpet. This grass is also greener or darker green in texture, so you can again have different contrast in color throughout the golf course which is desirable from the architectural standpoint of view.” So do golfers rate seashore paspalum as a birdie or a bogie? “I will definitely come back and I was very impressed to it." "We've come down the play three rounds and we've played at three different courses and this is by far the best.” “The end use is here, it’s not in my research plot, it’s not at the University of Georgia. It’s where it's gonna be used. And the acceptance of the golfers now, and various people trying this grass in a lot of different areas, that’s the pleasure that I’m getting.”Seashore paspalum appears to be a green solution that's par for the course. 200812/57787

Celebs invade the DNC Hollywood stars including Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Chevy Chase traveled to Denver to show support for Obama.Well, it looks like the Hollywood left their hills and are flew on over to Denver for the DNC. I’m talking big names, there are Ben Affleck, we are talking Shawn Pan, Steven Spielberg. These were guys with a lot of money, they are backing Obama it looks like. With us now, Andy Serwer, managing editor of Fortune Magazine. Literally I mean the celebrities and droves at the DNC, what is going on? They went from the hills of the mountains, (The hills of mountains.) there they go. (That is better than mine.) that’s no, it’s just adding on to, yours is good. Well, listen, these conventions have become sort of mega what, star kind of events. No. 1, I think that you know, politics and celebrity have been merging in our society for quite a well now, and so as we seeing more and more celebrities going these conventions, it’s not a big surprise, No. 1. No. 2, you are gonna see more celebrities at democratic convention, and republican one because let’s face at Hollywood, is a left-wing democrat libber town, there is no question about that. And you know, you see things like the White House correspondent’s dinner becoming more and more sort of like a red carpet event, (Yeah.) this is another point to make about these two worlds colliding. On the other hand, you know really is some business said has been done in terms of Hollywood, and politicians, as you know, Poppy I mean, Hollywood is a business, so they have business interest so they have to look after theses things.I gonna ask, is this the power of O, Obama and Oprah it seems, people follow Oprah wherever she goes, whatever she says, now there are a lot of them backing Obama. I mean, is this, this is the first we’ve seen with this much celebrity backing of a candidate, isn’t it.Yeah, I think that’s probably true, and I mean maybe it is like, you know, Chicago becoming the new LA, I don’t really think so. Listen, you know, they’ve always said that Washington is Hollywood for ugly people, so maybe the beautiful people are coming here, they will give me a little show. But I think you know, when you talk about the real business’s going on, first of all, a lot of these stars will tell you that they really are politically concerned, I mean, someone like Shawn Pan, L. M., really has been involved, the ethnic same thing, these guys have been doing this quite well now. But also you know, in terms of their bosses, the studio chiefs, and the moguls, and the producers, they actually, you know, concern the backing involved on the political process for a couple of real practical reasons. No. 1, you know, censorship, No. 2, tax breaks for deals, dealing with copyright issues when it comes to China. So you know, if you wanna have a cocktail party and get the politicians there, not just Obama, maybe the vice president, maybe the future secretary of state, etc . You know, it might not be a bad idea to show them and let them know that you got some ideas, and that what you get your foot involved in the door there. Ok, you know, on the foot set that though, can it ever be banned for a candidate, is it banned for Obama to have all of these celebrities backing that is making the front pages of tabloids and you know, this gossip magazines if you will because, remember that McCain ad, he’s the biggest celebrity in the world. I mean they are using it against him.And then Paris Hilton came right back, of course it did her a little thing, you know, I think, you know, it’s kind of a delicate ballots, obviously, if you just gonna hang out, pull side the LA all the time, if you are Barack Obama, that’s not gonna work very well, and he’s very well of that of course. And of course, it can backfire for the stars as well, I mean who can forget the dickercy checks, when they came out with that song that was anti-president Bush, and you know, there are country band, a lot of audience’s reacted very very negative to that. So I think both sides have to be a little careful. You know, what can you say, you know, if you got, you know, Hollywood’s stars coming to see you though, you can’t wanna answer the door. Don’t you think? All right, Andy, thank you very much. I appreciated it. Andy Serwer, managing editor of Fortune Magazine, and check out the piece about this and more by Richard S. Coffee is one of the world's most widely-enjoyed beverages. Flavor aside, scientists have recognized it as a complex blend of chemical compounds with potential health effects, both good and bad. Now, new research suggests that if you drink enough coffee, it might help you avoid certain kinds of cancer.Dr. Mia Hashibe of the University of Utah School of Medicine was interested in the link between coffee drinking and certain cancers of the head and neck. Researchers have looked into this before, but without reaching any firm conclusions."There were a few studies, but the findings were not consistent across the studies," she said, "so this finding from our current study was quite a surprise. We didn't really have any expectation of which direction it could go into."To sort out the confusion, Hashibe and her colleagues used statistical techniques to, in effect, make one big study out of the previous smaller studies. So we combined data across nine individual studies, so we have a lot more power than previous studies that looked at this. And we included 4,000 cancer patients who have cancer of the oral cavity and pharynx [throat]. And then 9,000 controls, so controls are people who do not have cancer."Those studies – in Europe and the ed States – found that people who drank a lot of coffee were less likely to develop cancers of the mouth and throat."We saw a protective effect for drinking more than 4 cups of coffee per day," Hashibe said. "This was the 40 percent decrease in risk. We did not observe an association for drinking three cups or less per day."In an interview via Skype, Mia Hashibe said there was a weak link between cancer risk and drinking decaffeinated coffee, but it wasn't statistically significant. And she and her colleagues found no evidence that drinking tea provided the same protection as drinking coffee. Their research is published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers amp; Prevention.Hashibe says it is not clear how coffee might protect drinkers from certain cancers."There are a few chemicals that are known to be antioxidants in coffee. So we are thinking perhaps those compounds are playing some sort of protective role against several cancers."If those compounds can be isolated, maybe someday you'll be able to take an anti-cancer pill, but for us coffee lovers, the answer may just be another refill. 201007/108435。

The idea of formal retirement did not become feasible until work moved from farms to factories. In 1889 Otto von Bismarck[1] famously introduced the world’s first (modest[2]) pension scheme in Germany. In the 20th century, when universal suffrage became widesp, a period of retirement after work was seen as a mark of a civilised social democracy. After the second world war pension provision increased markedly, but the number of elderly people was still quite small. In the 1970s and 1980s caring for them seemed easily affordable. Many countries even reduced their retirement ages. The demographic picture looks different now that the baby-boomers are starting to retire. In 1950 there were 7.2 people aged 20-64 for every person of 65 and more in the OECD. By 1980 the ratio had dropped to 5.1. Now it is around 4.1, and by 2050 it will be just 2.1. In short, every couple will be supporting a pensioner. 201105/136642Linguistics语言学Say what? To find new subjects of study, some linguists simply open their front doors要寻找新的研究主题,一些语言学家只须打开前门Sep 10th 2011 | NEW YORK | from the print edition WHERE in the world is the largest number of different languages spoken? US Congress Hears Views on Domestic Impacts of Recession美国议员听专家谈经济衰退的影响 Days before next Tuesday's U.S. presidential and congressional election, U.S. lawmakers heard from economists and other experts about the impact of recession on Americans, and pros and cons of a new economic stimulus package for the U.S. economy. Majority Democrats are expected to call Congress back into session in mid-November to focus on the U.S. financial crisis and possible new legislation aimed at stimulating the U.S. economy. This past week, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi pointed to data showing a decline in U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the third quarter of 2008, and an increase in the numbers of Americans applying for unemployment benefits, saying this underscores the need for what she called a fiscally responsible stimulus plan. Economists and other experts offered projections about just how bad the economic downturn, which many said constitutes a recession, may be. Appearing before the bipartisan Joint Economic Committee, J. Steven Landefeld, Director of the Bureau of Economic Analysis, says whether it's called a recession or not, the economy is in a dramatic slowdown: We all know there has been a huge loss of consumer wealth during this period. Household's disposable income share going to energy has certainly gone up considerably over time and the economy is growing at a rate too slow to generate new jobs sufficient to keep up with labor force growth, population growth, and growth in productivity," he said. Nuriel Rubini, a former U.S. treasury department official now at New York University, flatly calls it a recession, and predicts it will last 18 and possibly as long as 24 months, involving a cumulative decline in economic output of more than four percent, the worst since World War II. Rubini urges Congress to act on a second fiscal stimulus of at least 300 billion dollars, saying that without support for Main Street [average Americans], government steps to support financial markets could be undone: This action has to be taken right away and soon. We cannot wait until the next Congress in February because three months from now the collapse of spending, consumption and investments will be so sharp that the economic contractions could become even more severe," he said. Richard Vedder, Professor of Economics at Ohio University and a visiting scholar at the American Enterprise Institute is concerned that an overly-zealous Congress, as he puts it, will craft legislation that could have adverse effects and questions where the money will come from. "In a financially-stressed situation, we're talking about going out and borrowing to add 300 or 400 billion on to what we are aly doing, the better part of at trillion dollars, seven or eight percent of GDP. I think that is a dangerous and somewhat fiscally irresponsible thing to do and I think in the long-run it will inspire a decline in confidence and will lead to inflationary expectations soaring." Former International Monetary Fund research director Simon Johnson, now with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, warns of unprecedented global dimensions from a U.S. recession. He urges Congress to act quickly on a package of around 450-billion dollars, to include extending unemployment benefits, job re-training, student and small business loans, and infrastructure projects. "I think we probably have a month or perhaps two months to really see the direction of the economy. I would agree completely with people who think that now is the time to prepare a large fiscal stimulus."In the House Ways amp; Means Committee, state governors, a city mayor, and state and local officials called for another government stimulus plan. New York Governor David Paterson said his state is among 25 U.S. states facing huge deficits. "There are 25 states in deficit, totaling more than billion of debt. Their projections for 2010 are spiked upward incredibly. There will be 39 states in deficit and the amounts owed total over 5 billion." Among more dire warnings, Robert Greenstein, of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, spoke of potential sharp increases in poverty, with Americans facing what he calls holes in the social safety that did not exist during previous deep recessions in the 1970's and 1980's: "I think we are facing a growing prospect of levels of destitution, not just poverty, destitution, severe hardship and increases in homelessness that we haven't seen in several decades," he said. Democratic Representative Charlie Rangel, chairman of the Ways amp; Means panel, says Democrats and Republicans should work together when Congress returns after the election to help with the economy. "We have to be prepared to put together that will indeed be bipartisan. Quite frankly I don't think that should be very difficult. When someone loses their job, their health insurance, can't pay the mortgage, finds himself not being able to get credit, no one asks whether they are a Republican or whether they are Democrat." Republicans such as Representative Jim McRery share concerns about the widesp impacts of recession, but oppose any package that would have little chance of winning congressional and presidential approval. "It would do us little good to draft a package like that if it stands little chance of passing a closely-divided Senate or getting signed by the president," he said. The White House has so far expressed resistance, at least in public, to any new measure containing the kind of provisions and level of spending Democrats are likely to include. This means Democrats would have to wait until next year and a new congressional session, to work with either Senator Barack Obama or Senator John McCain as president, on the next stage of efforts to help the economy. 200811/54785

To really know what makes a great city work, you have to ppel back its skin and expose its secret life force.A system of incredible complexity in technology of millions depend on ,but few understand.A fantastic voyage now begins a journey deep inside the worlds megacities. Its the worlds biggest city.It covers more than 1400 square kilometers. Its population density is greater than New York City,Tokyo or London. But for the nearly 18 million people who live here its not just another metropolis.Mexico City is grounds zero.On one side, one of the worlds most earthquake-prone hot spots. On another, one of the worlds most active volcanos and beneath their feet, the shaky foundation of an ancient lake bed.The mother nature,Mexico City is one big target, at any moment, the big one could heat. From the instant the alarm sounds, they have just 60 seconds to reach safety. But the children of Mexico City, this drill may seem like funny games. But for the adults, its deadly serious. In 1985 they lived through the real thing. 165326

Bob Prout will spend 0,000 for a solar system powering his family's 3rd-generation funeral home in N.J. and still saveBob Prout's grandfather started his family-owned funeral parlor in 1920. It's changed a lot since then. Did , did people look at you and say you're crazy? What kind of a funeral parlor runs on solar energy. Even my best friend told me I was nuts. But when you talk to people now, what's their reaction? Now that the energy costs have sort of skyrocketied now, and people are getting their bills. I've got, there've been much warmer reception. Prout installed 114 solar panels on his roof 3 years ago before the price of oil reached 5 a barrel and before rates in his town rose dramatically. when you factor in the tremendous rate increases, I am still paying half of what I was paying three years ago for my electric. Paul says he produces about 3/4 of his electrical needs for his business and home upstairs. Every hour each individual solar panel produces enough energy for more than two 75-watt bulbs. The energy flows directly into the house and can be used immediately for things like light or air conditioning. whatever is not used is then sent out over the grid and is bought by the power company. the power company gets renewable energy to sell to consumers and Prout gets paid, last year, making some ,400. Technically, your energy may be in any of these wires, generally (that's correct) running around here(absolutely correct). That could be used at that building or the next building down the street. under the state's clean energy program, New Jersey helped pay for the panels which cost 0,000. Prout's share, ,000. He has aly cut his electrical bill some months by more than half.February was 259, 3 in March. Prout plans to add more panels by the end of the year. And I would like to see how low I could get the bill. I am Deborah Feyerick for CNNMoney.com200812/59345。

Dow's 2nd best day ever The Dow rallied as much as 906 points during Tuesday's session, as investors dove back into stocksA lot of Americans are a lot richer today as Shawn Shore admits at a late afternoon rally on Wall Street. Let’s head over to New York and CNN senior business correspondent Ali VelshiAli you and I’ve talked about this in the past week. We are really doubt obsess these days but today it was a good thing to be obsessed. Well, yeah, I mean, the thing is it’s not a particular underlining reason to this. If I would take all the economy news we had today, Nicole, I’m trying to make sense of it, I wouldn’t have a the second biggest point gain we’ve ever seen in the Dow and one of the biggest percentage gains we’ve seen too. That’s just not where the evidence lies. What this tells you is that this market is in a trading range. There are people, professional investors who maybe manage your, you know the mutual funds as you’re holding your 41K who think the stocks are good buy right now. They are just to bargain. Despite everything else is going on, there are other people who just want to get out of this market and there are the ones who are selling the stocks. If you look at how a market recovers after a major downturn like we’ve seen. If we are in a recovery mode, it is long and it is rocky. And that’s what you’re seeing. You’re seeing one of these big gains today. You’re just like you see sellout what remind you the fact cut rate tomorrow; there are meeting right now, we are likely to see a ing of GDP which’s just the broadest measure of our economy on Thursday; there comes a negative for the first time this year, so it’s not a great news story. It just happens we people seeing an opportunity to buy stocks because they’re on sale. But there are other indicators as well. Some of the smaller indexes all show up, the dollar’s up as well. How do you feel about all that? Put it all together. Oil prices are down. That always helps some. We’ve got oil prices as close as to 60 dollars and now in . When these things are all part and partial of what we see as a slowing economy. Oil prices are down because we see a weak economy. So here’s how it usually works. The market starts to recover, sort of earlier on in a recessionary cycle, but we still could see home prices going down. We’re still unlikely to see jobs are being lost. It’s one little piece of good news around and that is home prices. We’ve seed new and existing home prices obviously dropping. Existing homes are down about 9 per cent compared to last year. But you know what, because mortgage prices are still low we’ve actually seen people starting to get into that market. People are starting to buy because they can still get a mortgage at a low rate, Nicole so that’s …you that’s where we are..Those figures don’t account for the bailout; those housing figures are kind of earlier on. This was before the bailoutUh, there are, yeah, there are figures for last month. That’s right. But you see the average person who’s looking to buy a home because they have a price in mind as to what they can afford. Maybe they’ve got good credit and access to a mortgage. The bailout doesn’t really, you know, maybe didn’t motivate them one way or the other. This is people actually doing things that matter to them and that is buying out because they think it’s affordable and they can get a mortgage. In the end, our economy is not about sciences; it’s about how people feel about it. If somebody thinks it’s a good time to get involve in buying a house and then get a loan. That’s what you need Consumer confidence’s down though Worst we’ve ever seen (so that’s not..)…reeling for consumer confidence is the worst since they started reporting it in 1997 which is exactly right back-forth circle to the beginning of this conversation. If I were just ing the data, we wouldn’t have thought we would’ve had a two- point gain on the Dow. Never like you know, a 800-point gain. So that’s part of the issue. Consumers confidence tells you how people are gonna spend their money over the course of the next several months. But remember home prices became unaffordable for people in America and one the thing is happening is home prices are coming down and people are thinking they can afford a home. (So) So that’s a solver lighting on a very dragon cloud.Take a lot of sole with all of these. Don’t look at today as being the only indicator (correct, tha’t exactly right) Do we have to step back and look at we have a lot of indicators the month, today we have the year today we have 52 weeks today. (right) Those are all down and then down and the more down if you look at itRight right. That’s exactly right. Here what we are looking at is the fact that if our week at a point in this economy where things are low enough that people start to gain confidence. It’s take, it’s like a neighborhood. Our price is low enough that companies and businesses are coming in and build it up and then all of a sudden, you get stadiums and it becomes a nice place to live. That are we there in the economy? Some people say it’s too early to tell; others are just saying I wanna get in early because I see there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. But this is all of our behavior together. Fundamentally we are still negative about where the things are going and we are heading to the most important season of the year for retailers and for shopping. .Not very hopeful So by no means are we out of the worst and / a big gain like this in the Dow lead you to believe that we are. Yeah the Dow in quite convenient as big ball a big number there (right) but look at a lot of other staff. As we diversify our money we should also diversify indicators as you look at itAbsolutely rightThanks so much AliAll right, Nicole.200810/54533

Sri Lankan military officials say Tamil rebels carried out an aerial bombing raid in the capital of Colombo late Friday. A military spokesman said that shortly after the bombing, Sri Lanka's air force chased two rebel light aircraft and shot down one of them. Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said the wreckage and the body of the pilot were recovered. One plane crashed into a tax building, killing at least two people and injuring 48 others. Much of the city was blacked out briefly just before the attack as anti-aircraft fire lit up the night sky over Colombo and searchlights scanned for signs of more rebel planes. Nanayakkara said at least one suspected Tamil Tiger aircraft attacked Colombo. One explosion was heard near the city's port, and another near the Cinnamon Grand, a luxury hotel in the heart of the city. A third explosion was reported near the airport, about a 45-minute drive from the capital. Nanayakkara said a government tax office had been hit by a bomb. Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu, the executive director for the Center for Policy Alternatives, says the attacks were a bold move by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, or LTTE, most likely to show they are still a force to be reckoned with. Well, the LTTE clearly wants to show that they may be being knocked up, but they haven't been knocked out completely as yet and that they are capable of doing these things to cast some doubt on the extent to which their military capability has been destroyed," he said. The attack comes as Sri Lanka's military closes in on what are believed to be the last of the rebel strongholds. Sri Lanka's government has claimed that the rebels are no longer capable of launching air attacks. But security forces in the capital were on alert after a suspected Tiger Tamil aircraft was sighted northeast of capital hours before the attack. 02/62907
