President Powers, Provost Fenves, Deans, members of the faculty, family and friends and most importantly, the class of 2014. Congratulations on your achievement. Its been almost 37 years to the day that I graduated from UT.I remember a lot of things about that day.I remember I had throbbing headache from a party the night before. I remember I had a serious girlfriend, whom I later married-thats important to remember by the way-and I remember that I was getting commissioned in the Navy that day.But of all the things I remember, I dont have a clue who the commencement speaker was that evening and I certainly dont remember anything they said. So…acknowledging that fact-if I cant make this commencement speech memorable-I will at least try to make it short. The Universitys slogan is,;What starts here changes the world.;I have to admit-I kinda like it.;What starts here changes the world.;Tonight there are almost 8,000 students graduating from UT.That great paragon of analytical rigor, Ask.Com says that the average American will meet 10,000 people in their life time.Thats a lot of folks. But, if every one of you changed the lives of just ten people-and each one of those folks changed the lives of another ten people-just ten-then in five generations-125 years-the class of 2014 will have changed the lives of 800 million people.800 million people-think of it-over twice the population of the ed States. Go one more generation and you can change the entire population of the world-8 billion people. If you think its hard to change the lives of ten people-change their lives forever-youre wrong.I saw it happen every day in Iraq and Afghanistan.A young Army officer makes a decision to go left instead of right down a road in Baghdad and the ten soldiers in his squad are saved from close-in ambush. In Kandahar province, Afghanistan, a non-commissioned officer from the Female Engagement Team senses something isnt right and directs the infantry platoon away from a 500 pound IED, saving the lives of a dozen soldiers. But, if you think about it, not only were these soldiers saved by the decisions of one person, but their children yet unborn-were also saved. And their childrens children-were saved.Generations were saved by one decision-by one person. But changing the world can happen anywhere and anyone can do it.So, what starts here can indeed change the world, but the question is…what will the world look like after you change it?Well, I am confident that it will look much, much better, but if you will humor this old sailor for just a moment, I have a few suggestions that may help you on your way to a better a world. And while these lessons were learned during my time in the military, I can assure you that it matters not whether you ever served a day in uniform. It matters not your gender, your ethnic or religious background, your orientation, or your social status. Our struggles in this world are similar and the lessons to overcome those struggles and to move forward-changing ourselves and the world around us-will apply equally to all.I have been a Navy SEAL for 36 years. But it all began when I left UT for Basic SEAL training in Coronado, California.Basic SEAL training is six months of long torturous runs in the soft sand, midnight swims in the cold water off San Diego, obstacles courses, unending calisthenics, days without sleep and always being cold, wet and miserable. It is six months of being constantly harassed by professionally trained warriors who seek to find the weak of mind and body and eliminate them from ever becoming a Navy SEAL.But, the training also seeks to find those students who can lead in an environment of constant stress, chaos, failure and hardships. To me basic SEAL training was a life time of challenges crammed into six months. So, here are the ten lessons I learned from basic SEAL training that hopefully will be of value to you as you move forward in life.Every morning in basic SEAL training, my instructors, who at the time were all Vietnam veterans, would show up in my barracks room and the first thing they would inspect was your bed.If you did it right, the corners would be square, the covers pulled tight, the pillow centered just under the headboard and the extra blanket folded neatly at the foot of the rack-rack-thats Navy talk for bed.It was a simple task-mundane at best. But every morning we were required to make our bed to perfection. It seemed a little ridiculous at the time, particularly in light of the fact that were aspiring to be real warriors, tough battle hardened SEALs-but the wisdom of this simple act has been proven to me many times over.201503/366866云南中西结合医院祛痣多少钱 Hi,everybody. Our country is home to some of the most beautiful God-given landscapes in the world. Were blessed with natural treasures-from the Grand Tetons to the Grand Canyon; from lush forests and vast deserts to lakes and rivers teeming with wildlife. And its our responsibility to protect these treasures for future generations, just as previous generations protected them for us. Since taking office,Ive set aside more than 260 million acres of public lands and waters-more than any President in history.Last month,we announced that 11 states had come together with ranchers, and industry groups to protect a threatened species-the sage grouse-without jeopardizing local economies. Two weeks ago,we announced that were creating one new marine sanctuary on the Potomac River in Maryland, and another along Lake Michigan in Wisconsin-part of unprecedented efforts to restore the Chesapeake Bay and the Great Lakes. We also joined a coalition of countries cracking down on illegal fishing that threatens jobs and food security around the globe. And Im going to keep protecting the places that make America special, and the livelihoods of those who depend on them. Well also keep doing what we can to prevent the worst effects of climate change before its too late.Over the past six years, weve led by example, generating more clean energy and lowering our carbon emissions. Our businesses have stepped up in a big way, including just this past week. Some of our biggest companies made new commitments to act on climate-not just because its good for the planet, but because its good for their bottom line. This is how America is leading on the environment. And because America is leading by example,150 countries, representing over 85% of global emissions, have now laid out plans to reduce their levels of the harmful carbon pollution that warms our planet. And it gives us great momentum going into Paris this December, where the world needs to come together and build on these individual commitments with an ambitious,long-term agreement to protect this Earth for our kids. Now Congress has to do its job. This month, even as Republicans in Congress barely managed to keep our government open, they shut down something called the Land and Water Conservation Fund. For more than half a century, this fund has protected more than 5 million acres of land-from playgrounds to parks to priceless landscapes-all without costing taxpayers a dime.Nearly every single county in America has benefited from this program. It has bipartisan support in both the House and the Senate.Republicans in Congress should reauthorize and fully fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund without delay. After all,as Pope Francis reminds us so eloquently, this planet is a gift from God-and our common home.We should leave it to our kids in better shape than we found it. Thanks, and have a great weekend.

What is true and the reason that a lot of Americans feel anxious is that the economy has been changing in profound ways, changes that started long before the Great Recession hit and changes that have not let up. Today, technology doesnt just replace jobs on the assembly line, but any job where work can be automated. Companies in a global economy can locate anywhere, and face tougher competition. As a result, workers have less leverage for a raise. Companies have less loyalty to their communities. And more and more wealth and income is concentrated at the very top. All these trends have squeezed workers, even when they have jobs; even when the economy is growing. Its made it harder for a hardworking family to pull itself out of poverty, harder for young people to start on their careers, and tougher for workers to retire when they want to. And although none of these trends are unique to America, they do offend our uniquely American belief that everybody who works hard should get a fair shot. For the past seven years, our goal has been a growing economy that also works better for everybody. Weve made progress. But we need to make more. And despite all the political arguments weve had these past few years, there are some areas where Americans broadly agree. We agree that real opportunity requires every American to get the education and training they need to land a good-paying job.

He performed in soccer stadiums around the world, he sold hundreds of millions of records, he dined with prime ministers and presidents. Girls fell in love with him, boys fell in love with him, everyone wanted to dance like him. He seemed otherworldly--but he was also a human being. Like most performers he was shy and plagued with insecurities. I cant say we were great friends, but in 1991 I decided I wanted to try to get to know him better. I asked him out to dinner, I said ;My treat, Ill drive--just you and me.;正如大部分歌手一样,他很腼腆,又深深为自身的不安全感而困扰。 He agreed and showed up to my house without any bodyguards. We drove to the restaurant in my car. It was dark out, but he was still wearing sunglasses. I said, ;Michael, I feel like Im talking to a limousine. Do you think you can take off your glasses so I can see your eyes?;他答应了,并只身一人不带任何保镖出现在我家。 你能把眼镜摘下来让我看见你的眼睛吗?”He paused for a moment then he tossed the glasses out the window, looked at me with a wink and a smile and said, ;Can you see me now? 这样是不是更好?”In that moment, I could see both his vulnerability and his charm. The rest of the dinner, I was hell-bent on getting him to eat French fries, drink wine, have dessert and say bad words. Things he never seemed to allow himself to do. Later we went back to my house to watch a movie and we sat on the couch like two kids, and somewhere in the middle of the film, his hand snuck over and held mine. It felt like he was looking for a friend more than a romance, and I was happy to oblige him. In that moment, he didnt feel like a superstar. He felt like a human being. We went out a few more times together, and then for one reason or another we fell out of touch. Then the witch hunt began, and it seembed like one negative story after another was coming out about Michael. I felt his pain, I know what its like to walk down the street and feel like the whole world is turned against you. I know what its like to feel helpless and unable to defend yourself because the roar of the lynch mob is so loud that you are convinced your voice can never be heard. 201312/270982 And let us call it the Encyclopedia of Life. What is the Encyclopedia of Life? A concept that has aly taken hold and is beginning to sp and be looked at seriously? It is an encyclopedia that lives on the Internet and is contributed to by thousands of scientists around the world. Amateurs can do it also. It has an indefinitely expandable page for each species. It makes all key information about life on Earth accessible to anyone,on demand, anywhere in the world. Ive written about this idea before, and I know there are people in this room who have expended significant effort on it in the past. But what excites me is that since I first put forward this particular idea in that form, science has advanced. Technology has moved forward. Today, the practicalities of making such an encyclopedia, regardless of the magnitude of the information put into it, are within reach. Indeed, in the past year, a group of influential scientific institutions have begun mobilizing to realize this dream. I wish you would help them. Working together, we can make this real. The encyclopedia will quickly pay for itself in practical applications. It will address transcendent qualities in the human consciousness, and sense of human need. It will transform the science of biology in ways of obvious benefit to humanity. And most of all, it can inspire a new generation of biologists to continue the quest that started, for me personally, 60 years ago:最重要的是,它将为年轻一代的生物学家带来启发去继续我60年前开始的征途。to search for life, to understand it and finally, above all, to preserve it. That is my wish. Thank you.
