The Japanese continue to steam ahead of these ed States of American States in the field of absurdly delicious-sounding pizza concoctions. This is Pizza Hut’s contribution to the global pizza insanity landscape, and it is only available in Japan. This is the Morinaga Milk Caramel and Marshmallow pizza, available only through June in Japanese Pizza Huts in celebration of Morinaga Caramel’s 100th Anniversary. For only 800 yen (approximately ) you can have your very own caramel/marshmallow pizza. /201406/305127#39;What#39;s celebrity sex, Dad?#39; It was my 7-year-old son, who had been looking over my shoulder at my computer screen. He mispronounced #39;celebrity#39; but spoke the word #39;sex#39; as if he had been using it all his life. #39;Celebrity six,#39; I said, abruptly closing my AOL screen. #39;It#39;s a game famous people play in teams of three,#39; I said, as I ushered him out of my office and downstairs into what I assumed was the safety of the living room.“爸爸,什么是名人性爱(celebrity sex)?” No such luck. His 3-year-old sister had gotten her precocious little hands on my wife#39;s iPhone as it was charging on a table next to the sofa. By randomly tapping icons on the screen, she had conjured up an image of Beyonce barely clad in black leather, caught in a suggestive pose that I hoped would suggest nothing at all to her or her brother. And so it went on this typical weekend. The eff-word popped out of TV programs we thought were friendly enough to have on while the children played in the next room. Ads depicting all but naked couples beckoned to them from the mainstream magazines scattered around the house. The kids peered over my shoulder as I perused my email inbox, their curiosity piqued by the endless stream of solicitations having to do with one aspect or another of sex, sex, sex! When did the culture become so coarse? It#39;s a question that quickly gets you branded as either an unsophisticated rube or some angry culture warrior. But I swear on my hard drive that I#39;m neither. My favorite movie is #39;Last Tango in Paris.#39; I agree (on a theoretical level) with the notorious rake James Goldsmith, who said that when a man marries his mistress, he creates a job vacancy. I once thought of writing a book-length homage to the eff-word in American culture, the apotheosis of which was probably Sir Ben Kingsley pronouncing it with several syllables in an episode of #39;The Sopranos.#39;美国文化什么时候变得这么粗俗了? I#39;m cool, and I#39;m down with everything, you bet, but I miss a time when there were powerful imprecations instead of mere obscenity -- or at least when sexual innuendo, because it was innuendo, served as a delicious release of tension between our private and public lives. Long before there was twerking, there were Elvis#39;s gyrations, which shocked people because gyrating hips are more associated with women (thrusting his hips forward would have had a masculine connotation). But Elvis#39;s physical motions on stage were all allusion, just as his lyrics were:我不介意,也没什么意见,但我想念激烈咒骂而非裸淫秽的时光――或者至少是有性影射的时光,由于是影射,应该是作为我们私生活和公共生活之间压力的美好释放。 Touch it, pound it, what good does it do触摸它,敲打它,能有什么用There#39;s just no stoppin#39; the way I feel for you没有什么能阻挡我对你的感觉Cos#39; every minute, every hour you#39;ll be shaken因为每一分钟,每个小时你都会By the strength and mighty power of my love被我强烈和坚定的爱所震颤The relative subtlety stimulates the imagination, while casual obscenity drowns it out. And such allusiveness maintains social norms even as they are being violated -- that#39;s sexy. The lyrics of Elvis#39;s #39;Power of My Love#39; gave him authority as a respected social figure, which made his asocial insinuations all the more gratifying. The same went, in a later era, for the young Madonna: #39;Two by two their bodies become one.#39; It#39;s an electric image because you are actively engaged in completing it. Contrast that with the aging Madonna trash-talking like a kid:后来,年轻的麦当娜(Madonna)也是如此:“成双成对的,他们的身体合二为一。” Some girls got an attitude有些女孩喜欢摆架子Fake t--- and a nasty mood有一对假胸还有糟糕的情绪Hot s--- when she#39;s in the nude脱光的时候性感火辣(In the naughty naked nude)(调皮地脱光光)It#39;s the difference between locker-room talk and the language of seduction and desire. As Robbie Williams and the Pet Shop Boys observed a few years ago in their song #39;She#39;s Madonna#39;: #39;She#39;s got to be obscene to be believed.#39;这就像是偷偷讲黄色八卦和裸勾引欲望的区别。 Everyone remembers the Rolling Stones#39; #39;Brown Sugar,#39; whose sexual and racial provocations were perfectly calibrated for 1971. Few, if any, people can recall their foray into explicit obscenity two years later with #39;Star Star.#39; The earlier song was sly and licentious; behind the sexual allusions were the vitality and energy to carry them out. The explicitness of #39;Star Star#39; was for bored, weary, repressed squares in the suburbs, with their swingers parties and #39;key clubs.#39;大家都记得滚石(Rolling Stones)的《Brown Sugar》,里面关于性和种族歧视的挑 语言堪称为1971年量身打造。 Just as religious vows of abstinence mean nothing without the temptations of desire -- which is why St. Augustine spends so much time in his #39;Confessions#39; detailing the way he abandoned himself to the #39;fleshpots of Carthage#39; -- violating a social norm when the social norm is absent yields no real pleasure. The great provocations are also great releases because they exist side by side with the prohibitions that they are provoking. Once you spell it all out, the tension between temptation and taboo disappears. The open secret of violating a taboo with language that -- through its richness, wit or rage -- acknowledges the taboo is that it represents a kind of moralizing. In fact, all the magnificent potty mouths -- from D.H. Lawrence to Norman Mailer, the Beats, the rockers, the proto-punks, punks and post-punks, Richard Pryor, Sam Kinison, Patti Smith, and up through, say, Sarah Silverman and the creators of #39;South Park#39; -- have been moralizers. The late Lou Reed#39;s #39;I Wanna Be Black#39; is so full of racial slurs, obscenity and repugnant sexual imagery that I could not find one meaningful phrase to e in this newspaper. It is also a wryly indignant song that rips into the racism of liberals whose reverence for black culture is a crippling caricature of black culture. Though many of these vulgar outlaws were eventually warily embraced by the mainstream, to one degree or another, it wasn#39;t until long after their deaths that society assimilated them, still warily, and sometimes not at all. In their own lifetimes, they mostly existed on the margins or in the depths; you had to seek them out in society#39;s obscure corners. That was especially the case during the advent of new types of music. Swing, bebop, Sinatra, cool jazz, rock #39;n#39; roll -- all were specialized, youth-oriented upheavals in sound and style, and they drove the older generation crazy. These days, with every new ripple in the culture transmitted, commented-on, analyzed, mocked, mashed-up and forgotten on countless universal devices every few minutes, everything is available to everyone instantly, every second, no matter how coarse or abrasive. You used to have to find your way to Lou Reed. Now as soon as some pointlessly vulgar song gets recorded, you hear it in a clothing store. The shock value of earlier vulgarity partly lay in the fact that a hitherto suppressed impulse erupted into the public realm. Today Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram and the rest have made impulsiveness a new social norm. No one is driving anyone crazy with some new form of expression. You#39;re a parent and you don#39;t like it when Kanye West sings: #39;I sent this girl a picture of my d---. I don#39;t know what it is with females. But I#39;m not too good with that s---#39;? Shame on you. The fact is that you#39;re hearing the same language, witnessing the same violence, experiencing the same graphic sexual imagery on cable, or satellite radio, or the Internet, or even on good old boring network TV, where almost explicit sexual innuendo and nakedly explicit violence come fast and furious. Old and young, high and low, the idiom is the same. Everything goes. Graphic references to sex were once a way to empower the individual. The unfair boss, the dishonest general, the amoral politician might elevate themselves above other mortals and abuse their power, but everyone has a naked body and a sexual capacity with which to throw off balance the enforcers of some oppressive social norm. That is what Montaigne meant when he reminded his ers that #39;both kings and philosophers defecate.#39; Making public the permanent and leveling truths of our animal nature, through obscenity or evocations of sex, is one of democracy#39;s sacred energies. #39;Even on the highest throne in the world,#39; Montaigne writes, #39;we are still sitting on our asses.#39;对性的形象暗示曾经是赋予人权力的一种方式。 But we#39;ve lost the cleansing quality of #39;dirty#39; speech. Now it#39;s casual, boorish, smooth and corporate. Everybody is walking around sounding like Howard Stern. The trash-talking Jay-Z and Kanye West are superwealthy businessmen surrounded by bodyguards, media consultants and image-makers. It#39;s the same in other realms, too. What was once a cable revolution against treacly, morally simplistic network television has now become a formulaic ritual of #39;complex,#39; counterintuitive, heroic bad-guy characters like the murderous Walter White on #39;Breaking Bad#39; and the lovable serial killer in #39;Dexter.#39; And the constant stream of Internet gossip and brainless factoids passing themselves off as information has normalized the grossest references to sex and violence. Back in the 1990s, growing explicitness and obscenity in popular culture gave rise to the so-called culture wars, in which the right and the left fought over the limits of free speech. Nowadays no one blames the culture for what the culture itself has become. This is, fundamentally, a positive development. Culture isn#39;t an autonomous condition that develops in isolation from other trends in society. The JFK assassination, the bloody rampage of Charles Manson and his followers, the incredible violence of the Vietnam War -- shocking history-in-the-making that was once hidden now became visible in American living rooms, night after night, through new technology, TV in particular. Culture raced to catch up with the straightforward transcriptions of current events. And, of course, the tendency of the media, as old as Lord Northcliffe and the first mass-circulation newspapers, to attract business through sex and violence only accelerated. Normalized by TV and the rest of the media, the counterculture of the 1970s was smoothly assimilated into the commercial culture of the 1980s. Recall the 15-year-old Brooke Shields appearing in a commercial for Calvin Klein jeans in 1980, sping her legs and saying, #39;Do you know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing.#39; From then on, there was no going back. Today, our cultural norms are driven in large part by technology, which in turn is often shaped by the lowest impulses in the culture. Behind the Internet#39;s success in making obscene images commonplace is the dirty little fact that it was the pornography industry that revolutionized the technology of the Internet. Streaming , technology like Flash, sites that confirm the validity of credit cards were all innovations of the porn business. The Internet and pornography go together like, well, love and marriage. No wonder so much culture seems to aspire to porn#39;s depersonalization, absolute transparency and intolerance of secrets. An essay like this typically ends with a set of prescriptions to solve the problem laid out in the previous paragraphs. But when the culture of vulgarity is produced by so many different factors -- commercial, economic, social, aesthetic -- there is no end in sight. One can only hope that, as happens so often in America, restless impatience with the status quo will carry the day and the pendulum will swing to the other side -- not toward censorship and repression but toward the sacred power of sexual self-assertion and outlaw imprecations. From Miley Cyrus#39;s brilliant, purposeful, repeated travesties of her wholesome image -- #39;This is what culture is really about now,#39; she seems to be saying -- to songs by Eminem, Lady Gaga, Kanye West and others that express disgust with their own celebrity and wealth, pop culture itself seems to yearn for a time when obscenity and graphic sexual images were morally potent rather than merely titillating and profitable. So maybe there is hope, and we will find, after all, some relief from the relentless hum of casual coarseness and vulgarity. Or maybe not. I#39;ll still be keeping my finger on the off-button of whatever device I happen to be using in case my children happen by. Celebrity Six is a game I hope they never learn to enjoy, even as adults. /201401/272940

Eight out of ten women #39;edit#39; their holiday snaps before uploading them to social media so only their slimmest angles are shared, according to new research. Most women will also delete unflattering pictures of themselves even if other people in the frame look good. More than half of women (58 per cent) will remove pictures taken by their husbands or boyfriends to make sure only the most flattering pictures survive. And women take charge of distributing holiday pictures in 74 per cent of couples.74%的情侣中,女方占据发布假日照片的主力。The unflattering picture black-out was revealed in a new survey of 1, 000 women by the diet firm Forza Supplements. The poll highlighted the five pictures women most hate of themselves on holiday. Number one were those showing them sitting down with a bare midriff showing rolls of fat around the tummy. The second worst picture nightmare is being caught with tight jeans and a muffin top bulging out of the sides. The third picture #39;no no#39; is being shot with a double chin and fourth on the blacklist were obvious drunken shots. The final picture nightmare is those taken straight after swimming where the hair is wet and unkempt. The Forza survey found that 95 per cent of holiday-makers now share their pictures via social media sites like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter or simply by emailing them on PCs and phones.该调查还发现,目前,95%度假者通过脸书、Instagram(增译:一款运行在iPhone平台上的照片分享应用程序)和推特等社交网站分享她们的照片,或利用个人电脑或手机发送邮件。A staggering 76 per cent of women have been #39;embarrassed#39; after a friend or relative have shared a picture of them which they didn#39;t like. A further 57 per cent have asked friends or relatives to delete pictures from sites like Facebook because they were unflattering. The most popular reason for picture deletions was, #39;because I looked fat.#39;删除照片最常见理由是:“因为我看起来很胖。”The overwhelming majority of women (82 per cent) admitted that they edited holiday pictures - removing pictures of themselves which were unflattering even if the other people in the frame looked good. More than third of women (34) use filters on sites such as Instagram to make themselves look better in pictures before sharing them with friends. A quarter of women said they had been inspired to edit their holiday pictures because they were #39;intimidated#39; by beach pictures of celebrities looking great in their bikini such as Elle Macpherson and Gwyneth Paltrow. Forza Supplements#39; sales shoot up by a third between May and August as women go on diets to prepare for the beach. Lee Smith, managing director of Forza Supplements, said: ‘It is very clear that women rule the roost when it comes to holiday pictures. ‘Whether they take the pictures or not, they decide which shots get shared with family or friends and they will delete any in which they looking overweight. ‘They are not slow in gently asking friends to remove pictures which they don#39;t like.’ /201408/317557

Nestle, the world#39;s biggest food company, has removed beef pasta meals from shelves in Italy and Spain after tests revealed traces of horse DNA above 1 percent. Swiss-based Nestle, which just last week said products under its labels were not affected by the escalating horsemeat scandal, said it had informed the authorities, according to a report on the Financial Times website. Nestle was not immediately available for comment. The discovery of horsemeat in products labelled as beef began in Ireland last month and has rapidly sp across Europe, resulting in several product withdrawals and government investigations into the long and complex food-processing chains that criss-cross the continent. Nestle withdrew two chilled pasta products, Buitoni Beef Ravioli and Beef Tortellini, in Italy and Spain, the FT said. A little bit of it chases the blues away: ;A gramme; — Huxley was English, remember, spelling included — ;is better than a damn.; With a swallow, negative feelings are dispelled. Prozac, the subject of this week#39;s documentary from Retro Report, is hardly soma. But its guiding spirit is not dissimilar: A few milligrams of this drug are preferable to the many damns that lie at the core of some people#39;s lives. Looking back at Prozac#39;s introduction by Eli Lilly and Company in 1988, and hopscotching to today, the documentary explores the enormous influence, both chemical and cultural, that Prozac and its brethren have had in treating depression, a concern that gained new resonance with the recent suicide of the comedian Robin Williams. In the late 1980s and the 90s, Prozac was widely viewed as a miracle pill, a life preserver thrown to those who felt themselves drowning in the high waters of mental anguish. It was the star in a class of new pharmaceuticals known as S.S.R.I.s — selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Underlying their use is a belief that depression is caused by a shortage of the neurotransmitter serotonin. Pump up the levels of this brain chemical and, voilà, the mood lifts. Indeed, millions have embraced Prozac, and swear by it. Depression left them emotionally paralyzed, they say. Now, for the first time in years, they think clearly and can embrace life. Pharmacological merits aside, the green-and-cream pill was also a marvel of commercial branding, down to its market-tested name. Its chemical name is fluoxetine hydrochloride, not the most felicitous of terms. A company called Interbrand went to work for Eli Lilly and came up with Prozac. ;Pro; sounds positive. Professional, too. ;Ac;? That could signify action. As for the Z, it suggests a certain strength, perhaps with a faint high-techy quality. (X is a pharmacological cousin to Z. Both letters are somewhat unusual, worth many points in Scrabble. It is surely not a coincidence that a striking number of modern medications contain either Z or X, or both, in their names, like Luvox, Paxil, Celexa, Effexor, Zantac, Xanax, Zoloft, Lexapro and Zocor, to name but a few. Not surprisingly, confusion can set in. Zantac or Xanax — remind me which one is for heartburn and which for panic disorder?)(在制药领域,X与Z的地位近似。 Pendulums, by definition, swing, and the one on which Prozac rides is no exception. After the early talk about it as a wonder pill — a rather chic one at that — a backlash developed, perhaps unsurprisingly. Grave questions arose among some psychiatrists about whether the S.S.R.I.s increased chances that some people, notably teenagers, would commit suicide or at least contemplate it. No definite link was confirmed, but that did not end the concern of some prominent skeptics, like a British psychiatrist, Dr. David Healy. He has dismissed the notion of S.S.R.I.s as saviors as ;bio-babble.;但凡事都是三十年河东三十年河西,百忧解也不例外。 If some users deem Prozac lifesaving, others consider it sensory-depriving. A loss of libido is a common side effect. Some writers and artists, while often relieved to be liberated from depression#39;s tightest grip, also say that Prozac leaves them mentally hazy. In his 2012 book, ;Antifragile: Things That Gain From Disorder,; Nassim Nicholas Taleb offered this: ;Had Prozac been available last century, Baudelaire#39;s ‘spleen,#39; Edgar Allan Poe#39;s moods, the poetry of Sylvia Plath, the lamentations of so many other poets, everything with a soul would have been silenced.;有人觉得百忧解可以救命,其他使用者则认为它剥夺了人正常的生理感觉。 Then, too, S.S.R.I. critics express doubts that these drugs have proved themselves significantly more effective than placebos. Some among them question the very concept that serotonin levels, on their own, cause depression or prevent it. One psychotherapist in that camp is Gary Greenberg, an author of several books on mood disorders. Writing in The New Yorker last year, Dr. Greenberg said that scientists had ;concluded that serotonin was only a finger pointing at one#39;s mood — that the causes of depression and the effects of the drugs were far more complex than the chemical-imbalance theory implied.;此外,SSRI的批判者们还怀疑这些药物的效果是否显著优于安慰剂。 ;The ensuing research,; he continued, ;has mostly yielded more evidence that the brain, which has more neurons than the Milky Way has stars and is perhaps one of the most complex objects in the universe, is an elusive target for drugs.;“人的大脑中包含的神经元数量比系中的恒星还要多,”他继续写道,“而后续的研究得到的据大多表明,大脑是药物很难作用到的靶标。”More broadly, this retrospective on Prozac introduces a discussion of whether the medical establishment, and perhaps society in general, has gone too far in turning normal conditions, like sadness, into pathologies. And have we paved a path — shades of soma — toward wanton reliance on drugs to enhance life, not to conquer true illness? This is what a prominent psychiatrist, Dr. Peter Kramer, has called ;cosmetic psychopharmacology,; a Botox approach, if you will, to matters of the mind: Why not take Prozac and its S.S.R.I. mates even if you are not clinically depressed but believe that they can boost your confidence, or maybe help you make a stronger pitch at the sales meeting? A response from others in Dr. Kramer#39;s field is that we are taking traits that are normal parts of human nature and casting them as diseases simply because remedies now exist. For instance, shyness is now regarded by some as a condition in need of treatment. In its more severe form, it is placed under the heading of social anxiety disorder. Then there are those much-heralded life enhancers, Viagra and its erection-aiding cousins. They are marketed not only to men with sexual dysfunction but also to those whose aging bodies are enduring normal wear and tear. One area of shyness that the S.S.R.I. class has helped overcome is discussion of depression. Decades ago, Hollywood stars and other celebrities dared not touch the subject. Now they routinely go public with their anguish. Robin Williams was an example. Of course, there are those in other realms of society for whom the topic remains taboo. Take one man who confesses to his wife that he is on Prozac but cautions her to tell no one. ;I#39;m serious,; he says. ;The wrong person finds out about this and I get a steel-jacketed antidepressant right in the back of the head.; This is Tony Soprano talking to his wife, Carmela. An extreme example from a work of fiction? Sure. But in all likelihood many Americans have similar fears about what others might think, and keep depression to themselves. /201410/336081

Though Phillip Lim has a reputation for keeping things low-key, this New York Fashion Week is a splashy one for the designer, who opens a new 3.1 Phillip Lim flagship store on September 10 at 48 Great Jones Street in NoHo. The 3,500-square-foot space, designed in collaboration with the London agency Campaign, features vintage furniture and artwork curated by Lim himself. Its look was inspired by Lim’s design studio, which he calls “the only space that I am offered where ideas become realized and my daydreams are romanced into realities.” The opening will also celebrate the release of a book showcasing photographs of the store in progress by the artist Bill Jacobson. Here, in honor of New York Fashion Week, the SoHo resident lists a few of his go-to things and places around town. Restaurant: “Contrary to popular belief, there is no glamour in the glory. I never plan too far in advance because the buildup and anticipation drives me crazy.” /201409/328356What makes a woman happy? Power, money, love, sex? In fact, self-fulfillment ranks the highest, for more than 60 percent of the respondents in a recent survey. The survey was conducted by the Yueji.Self, a Chinese-language magazine jointly launched this month by the Chinese-language Women of China magazine and the New York-based magazine publisher Conde Nast Publications.《中国妇女》杂志(中文版)社联合纽约康泰纳仕杂志社推出的中文杂志《悦己SELF》开展了此项调查。;The high marks for self -fulfillment are inspiring and encouraging,; Li Yinhe, a noted sexologist and professor at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said. ;It shows big progress. More and more women want to achieve their life value, which eclipses the importance of the private life for women.“这是个很大的进步,如今越来越多的女性渴望实现自己的人生价值,家庭生活不再像从前那么重要。”;When women start to value self fulfillment, they become more equal to men.;“女性开始追求自我实现,这是男女平等进步的体现。”In China, the traditional mindset is that men live for their careers and women live for love. Although only about 22.5 percent surveyed prioritized love as the big happiness maker, it doesn#39;t mean that Chinese women no longer believe in love, Li said. However, it demonstrated that love was no longer the most important factor for a woman to be happy in China. This is perhaps reflected in the growing trend that many Chinese women are opting to remain single. While the dependence on love for happiness has dampened, according to the survey, so has sex. Only about 2.2 percent of Chinese women consider sex the most valuable factor to a happy woman. The reason, Li said, was that the word was stereotyped with negative meanings. ;A good woman should not like sex,; she said. ;Love is a beautiful word. But power, money and sex all represent the negative things.;“爱情是个美好的字眼。 So it is understandable when only 0.6 percent of women chose power, the lowest among all options, the survey showed. The survey is also the first of its kind to be carried out in 15 cities on the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan province. It surveyed 24,107 women aged from 25 to 35 from December 2006 and March 2007. /201403/278437Pregnant women who eat more peanuts and tree nuts during pregnancy might be less likely to bear nut-allergic children, a new study suggests. The research, published Monday in the journal JAMA Pediatrics, supports the current consensus among medical professionals that delaying the introduction of nuts, milk, fish, shellfish, eggs and other highly allergenic foods in young children doesn#39;t prevent the development of food allergies, said Michael C. Young, associate clinical professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, and a senior author of the study. The findings inversely link a pregnant mother#39;s consumption of peanuts or tree nuts with the onset of nut allergies in her child. The more nuts the mother ate while pregnant, or within a year before or after pregnancy, the lower the risk that the child would go on to develop nut allergies, Dr. Young said. The study doesn#39;t demonstrate a causal relationship between a pregnant mother#39;s diet and the onset of nut allergies in her offspring, he said. The researchers stopped short of advising pregnant women to eat more nuts. Further, interventional studies -- in which researchers would separate participating pregnant women into groups and prescribe their diets, rather than simply track their consumption -- are required before they can make such a recommendation. Researchers led by A. Lindsay Frazier of the Dana-Farber/Boston Children#39;s Cancer and Blood Disorders Center in Boston, analyzed data from 8,205 children born between Jan. 1, 1990 and Dec. 31, 1994 to mothers who had reported their diets at or around the time of pregnancy. Of the children they tracked, 140 had developed a peanut or tree nut allergy by 2009. All self-reported cases of physician-diagnosed nut allergies were reviewed independently by two pediatricians, according to the study. The prevalence of childhood peanut allergy in the U.S. has become an #39;epidemic#39; in recent years, Dr. Young said. The rate of 1.4% in 2010 is more than triple the rate of 0.4% in 1997, according to the study. Peanut and tree nut allergies tend to overlap, and such allergies typically become evident with a child#39;s first known exposure to peanuts or tree nuts, the study said. It defines tree nuts as walnuts, almonds, pistachios, cashews, pecans, hazelnuts, macadamias and Brazil nuts. Until recently, the American Academy of Pediatrics had recommended that young children avoid eating peanuts and tree nuts until at least age 3 and cautioned pregnant or nursing women against eating peanuts. In 2008, AAP did away with those guidelines after further studies showed little support for them. The new data support the AAP#39;s move to rescind the recommendation, Dr. Young said. The research #39;supports the hypothesis that early allergen exposure increases the likelihood of tolerance and thereby lowers the risk of childhood food allergy,#39; the study said. Limitations of the study include that the dietary questionnaires weren#39;t specific to the dates of the mothers#39; pregnancies. Only 45% of the questionnaires were completed during pregnancy, and 76% within one year. In an editorial also published Monday in JAMA Pediatrics, Ruchi Gupta, associate professor of pediatrics at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, counseled pregnant mothers against avoiding nuts for fear of causing their children to develop nut allergies. #39;Certainly, women who are allergic to nuts should continue avoiding nuts,#39; she added. #39;Mothers-to-be should feel free to curb their cravings with a dollop of peanut butter!#39; Dr. Gupta wrote. /201312/270219
